🚨 COOL TOOL ALERT 🚨 The most interesting and helpful uses of GenAI in HR have nothing to do with you promoting it. GenAI is most impactful when it creates massive efficiency and provides intelligence virtually impossible today. Case in point: Does anyone have a manager that stinks at 1:1s? Are you, perhaps, that manager? EPAM is experimenting with using GenAI to help managers provide better, more data-driven and more personalized 1:1s. I see so many benefits of this tool for managers and employees, including helping employees feel seen and recognized for the many ways they engage in the workplace. After reading numerous books on #leadership, #growth, and #management, I began to notice a lot of repetitive content, which made the experience somewhat monotonous. However, this talk was a refreshing change. It illuminated how the action fallacy can often mislead leaders during the rewards process: 1. Not all actions lead to meaningful outcomes. 2. For decades Polish work culture has been known for being washed off empathy. Yet still every year a lot changes but sometimes very little. Every year, almost every quarter I get to know personally or hear managers laughing at laying off employees while they are in hospital, concluding it publicly as "sh... happens". The tolerance for lack of empathy goes rapidly down, probably faster than any other cultural changes. As your organisation grows, so do its employees. Lack of empathy spreads apathy. Many outgrow cultural change to much surprise of managers. Many of those employees just quit. Even more of them quit quietly, ie. they don't quit - remain in the organisation and willing to deliver as little value as possible. Future of any successful company is directly related to management practices and the core of human related managament in the future is going to be centered around empathy.

Are You Shy About Telling Your Manager You Use ChatGPT? 🤖 I was super inspired by the latest episode of the Supermanagers podcast by Fellow.app. I’m actually obsessed with it and listen to almost every episode—I highly recommend it! This time, the host, Aydin Mirzaee, CEO of Fellow.app, was interviewing Anthony Onesto, Chief People Officer at Suzy, and they covered a lot of fascinating topics, especially about Gen Z in the workplace and how we need to be prepared to work with them—and before that, even to hire them. Of course, as Aydin is an advocate for effective meetings, there were some great tips and insights on that topic. But the part that really inspired me was about ChatGPT. Anthony mentioned that we shouldn’t be shy about telling people at work that we use ChatGPT—after all, it’s just a tool that helps us, like using a Mac. We don’t hide that, so why hide this? I also loved the phrase he used: for content creation or internal and external communications, we don’t need to write from scratch anymore—we’re now Editors. As a Technical Program Manager, I work a lot on communication plans and messaging, and the assistance from ChatGPT has been a huge help. Writing this post today, I’m also an Editor, not a Writer 😉, and I’m not shy to admit it. What about you? Do you often tell your manager that you’ve used ChatGPT? Someone recently asked me how EPAM creates a culture of openness to sharing skills and related data. Here's my take. I hope it's helpful for those of you on the skills journey! WE MAKE IT EASY We don’t expect employees to create their skills profiles, we ask them to correct and edit profiles built for them. Everyone at EPAM, even a brand new hire, has a baseline skills profile populated with inferred and validated data. As people work and learn, their skills profiles are automatically updated with new information, so the onus is not on employees to keep them current. The profile is there for them to see and edit for accuracy. And EPAMers do edit their profiles. We have a central digital platform that almost everyone at EPAM accesses weekly if not daily. "Skills" is prominently featured on the homepage, with profiles displayed in clear graphic and text formats. It’s easy for employees to understand and check their profiles regularly, fixing errors or adding things the system has missed. We also use push notifications and nudges to encourage profile updates and have an intuitive user experience to reduce headache. WE MAKE IT WORTHWHILE Imagine a job where you --Know what skills you have and what you need --Receive personalized learning paths to address those gaps, along with mentor support and a community of practice for further support --Regularly get project recommendations based on your skill profile, aligning your work with your strengths and career goals --Know that promotions are based primarily on skills, not just tenure or connections Would you trade skills data for that kind of career experience? In our experience, most people say yes--the WIIFM is compelling. WE CARE ABOUT QUALITY We think about skills in terms of data and data in terms of quality. Employees know much effort we put in to getting good data because they see evidence of it all the time. They also know that we aim for quality decision-making. It’s widely understood that skills data are just an input to decisions made by people because a) no data is perfect and b) there’s more to employees than their skills. Finally, EPAMers understand that we are collecting and using skills data to help them improve as individuals and our company succeed; there’s no fear of meaningless data collection or worse, skills data used as a stick. I imagine that our culture would be very different if these three things weren’t true. IT'S NOT REALLY AN OPTION :-) When I say that skills are at the foundations of EPAM’s business, I really mean that. We see skills data as critical to our ability succeed in rapidly changing market conditions and deliver quality to clients. Without it, we’d be operating half blind with one hand tied behind our back.
