The Narrative Power Summit (NPS), co-hosted by RadComms and ReFrame, is a transformative convening for social justice communicators and movement workers. NPS brings together a global community of narrative strategists, organizers, culture workers, and more to: Strengthen relationships Spark collaboration Generate new ideas Engage in political and ideological learning This is a hybrid gathering with both in-person and virtual tracks available. Who is NPS for? NPS applications are open to communicators, digital strategists, organizers, and other movement workers and leaders with a proven commitment to narrative power-building for racial, gender, economic, and climate justice. This space prioritizes voices, expertise, and experience of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, AAPI, transgender, gender non-conforming, nonbinary, intersex (TGNCIi), queer, disabled, immigrant, cash poor, and others excluded from traditional establishment nonprofit spaces. We are especially interested in welcoming communicators who serve grassroots organizations, coalitions, networks, and other formations. When and where is NPS 2025? NPS will be held May 7-10, 2025 in a major city in the American South TBA. Who is presenting at NPS 2025? Sessions will be sourced and selected from proposals submitted by accepted participants. Once applicants have been accepted to attend NPS, they will be invited to register and submit a session proposal if interested. How much does NPS cost? We estimate that summit tickets will cost approximately $875 for in-person attendees and $200 for virtual attendees (this will be confirmed at the time of registration). The in-person ticket price for people working at organizations with annual budgets of more than $3 million is $1,250. The in-person ticket includes access to the meeting venue, two meals per session day, access to onsite sessions and general admissions events, a swag bag, etc. Round-trip travel and lodging must be booked separately. The virtual ticket includes access to virtual sessions, general admission virtual mixers and events, etc.

Smart Growth America’s 2024 Dangerous by Design Report is now out. Unsurprisingly, yet still increasingly saddening and maddening, those that walk and roll through communities all across America (and for many, not by choice), are doing so by placing their lives on the line. The bad news is that 7,522 people were struck and killed while walking in 2022, with Black, Native American, low-income folks, and the elderly at exponentially higher levels. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time for those in power to prioritize the safety and well-being of the nearly 30% of Americans that do not or cannot rely on personal vehicles to get around. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy talks about the need for a "whole-of-society approach" to advancing social connection. We've tried to heed that call in our work at Einhorn Collaborative, supporting a broader range of efforts that engage actors across sectors. That includes: Projects like Team Up to enlist large national civic organizations with a presence in local communities to help people build connection across difference through service. Research groups like Building H to measure the impact of products on consumers’ health and urge companies to do better to improve social connection and other health outcomes. Initiatives like Human Connections AI to bring together social connection experts with technologists to puzzle through how AI companions can be designed to enhance and not degrade human relationships. Another project that has helped us explore a facet of the whole-of-society approach is the Connective Tissue Framework, which puts forward a range of recommendations for how government – especially at the local level – can create the structural conditions and everyday opportunities for people to experience healthy connection. I've learned a lot from Sam Pressler, lead author of Connective Tissue. Silos don't just make it hard for fundraisers to get their work done, they make for poor donor experiences too. No one team should 'own' an audience. No donors should be 'ringfenced' for a one ask or offer. Who wants to have one message from a cause you care about on repeat? Supporters want and deserve a richer experience, with a choice of ways to help. But all too often, we don't give them that choice, because we want their donations to sit in our budget line. Supporters do not care about your budget lines, or which code they came in on. So what do you do when teams can't agree on what and when to communicate with supporters? 1. You need to go back to your common goal. The thing that unites all of you. Not only your organisation mission, but the core aims at the heart of your strategy. Sit down with the people you least like having to negotiate with internally, and work through it. 2. Talk to your supporters. We spend a lot of time doing that at Flying Cars. There are few things more compelling to those resisting integration than your donors, on camera, telling you they want it. 3. Naturally, some teams, and some asks, are better for bringing people in. Others do a better job of keeping people around and building long term support. So advocate for better measurement tools, and KPIs like LTV that look at the whole department impact – that goes for brand too. All of your marketing, every interaction, plays a part in their lifetime commitment and generosity with your cause. If all of your fundraisers are held to strict, channel or ask specific KPIs, integration isn't going to be possible. And ultimately, it's donors who suffer – along with your income. #integration #silos #fundraising

Real talk: Met with several social purpose leaders lately who are stuck on social impact measurement. Here's what they're missing: If you're only measuring impact to chase government grants or impress funders, that's not ideal but it can be fixed. 🔍 Impact measurement is about managing your mission, not just securing funding. Government grants aren't sustainable - build systems that help you make better decisions. 🚗  In fact, as it related to government, stay in your lane. Your goal isn't to replicate government data systems or replace programs that should be government responsibility. 📊 You've probably got most of what you need already. Start with your existing data. No need for complex frameworks or expensive consultants day one. 👥 Your entire leadership team needs to own this. I've seen too many development and fundraising folks lead this work. Impact management is about steering your organization, not just reporting numbers. 🤝 Check out Common Approach's standards - they provide a flexible, minimum standard for impact measurement that works WITH your existing tools. Nonprofits, here is a tip for your next data collection work (say a survey): When it comes to surveys, we tend to focus on simply gathering data for reporting or immediate needs, but we miss intentional inclusion in designing surveys that inspire action and foster engagement. When you think about surveys, do you see them as tools to collect data, or as opportunities to build relationships? Most nonprofits stop at data collection, but the real magic lies in using surveys as a two-way conversation that deepens trust and commitment. How? By asking questions that empower respondents to dream, aspire, and share their ideas for your organization’s future. These kinds of questions go beyond ● uncountable open-ended questions. ●  70+ all possible questions in a survey. ● focusing solely on quantitative or qualitative parts. ●  questions within questions designs. This different design is about showing that their input shapes a future you will co-build with them. Because these surveys not only gather data but also build allies for your cause. I have been fortunate to spend most of my career serving social impact -- as a healthcare worker, as a teacher, as a nonprofit leader. I also have formal business training and I live under capitalism and recognize its influence in all things. In any business venture, for profit or nonprofit, it's necessary to understand who else is already doing the thing. They are competitors and collaborators, and often they are both. What I appreciate about social impact business is the emphasis on collaboration. I love what Cameron Dearlove wrote about nonprofit duplication this week. I hear this all the time, and if you are in nonprofit work I'm sure you have as well. The thing that I would add to Cameron's thoughtful take on this, is the importance of collaboration and support in a system that is underserved. I see a trend that funders--from government to foundations--are looking to support coalitions instead of single entities. To Cameron's point, variety and niche service at the grassroots level is a good thing. This is a targeted universalism approach. Smaller grassroots organizations provide a zoomed-in view of specific community need. Coalition building zooms out, elevates the collaborative message, allows for sharing of resources, and moves everyone together towards the same universal goal. Lovely.
