The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has unveiled a raft of revisions and resources designed to help financial institutions set ambitious near-term emissions reduction targets. The changes to #SBTi criteria are set to come into force on 30 November 2024. Under the new criteria, financial firms with validated targets must align their operational and power emissions from a pathway aligned with "well-below" 2C of warming to one aligned with 1.5C of warming. They must also meet #Scope1 and #Scope2 emissions reduction targets in a five-to-10-year timeframe, down from the five-to-15-year window they were afforded previously, according to the SBTi. #Sustainability #ESG #NetZero #Climatetargets

Yesterday the US Federal Government endorsed the voluntary carbon market. What a great moment for the climate!   Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Environmental Defense Fund and Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), the White House has shared a set of integrity principles. Building on existing efforts in the market, such as those of the The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) and VCMI, these principles reaffirm the importance of high-quality carbon credits in meeting our global climate goals.   Such high-level backing is extremely positive. It shows that these solutions are growing more mainstream and are increasingly recognised as viable, scalable solutions to the climate and nature crises. New pivotable report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) "Strategies for Affordable and Fair Clean Energy Transitions," highlighting that in key sectors clean energy technologies are cheaper and more affordable then current fossil fuelled technologies creating net savings for countries and users. In the latest Carbon Brief newsletter, the team highlights a recent study from #NatureClimateChange that reminds us of the six components of feasibility that could inhibit the world’s ability to limit #warming to #1.5C, according to the IPCC's special report on 1.5C. They are: 1) #Geophysical: What global emission pathways could be consistent with conditions of a 1.5°C warmer world? What are the physical potentials for adaptation? 2) #Environmental-#ecological: What are the #ecosystemservices and resources, including #geological storage capacity and related rate of needed #landusechange, available to promote transformations, and to what extent are they compatible with enhanced #resilience? 3) #Technological: What #technologies are available to support transformation? 4) #Economic: What economic conditions could support transformation? 5) #Socio-#cultural: What conditions could support transformations in #behaviour and lifestyles? To what extent are the transformations socially acceptable and consistent with #equity? 6) #Institutional: What institutional conditions are in place to support transformations, including multi-level #governance, institutional capacity, and #political support? In the analysis, it is noted that "The future warming pathways used by the IPCC suggest that holding warming to 1.5C is unlikely, but still possible, when considering the technological feasibility and project-level economic costs of reaching net-zero emissions. However, the new study, published in Nature Climate Change, warns that adding in political and institutional constraints on mitigation make limiting warming to 1.5C even more challenging. Much of the attention around the Energy Transition Accelerator, which C2ES has helped to develop over the past year and a half, has rightly focused on its potential to generate tens of billions of dollars in finance to accelerate the just clean energy transition in developing countries. But the ETA is also innovating on the demand side: that is, on how companies might use ETA credits – generated from verified reductions in emissions from the electric power sector in participating countries – as part of their voluntary corporate climate strategies. The ETA Core Framework, published in November 2023, envisions four use cases. The use case that has received overwhelming interest from companies is Use Case 2, in which ETA credits could be used to address the upstream Scope 3 emissions related to electricity use by a company’s suppliers. This use case has the potential to be a major new tool for companies aiming to address emissions in their supply chains: think of the electricity used not only to manufacture consumer products but also to make the inputs needed to produce a range of goods and services. A new brief from Winrock International’s Net Zero Climate Services Unit explores how this use case could work. It explains the challenges companies face in cutting Scope 3 emissions and shows how ETA credits could help companies concretely tackle these emissions. The brief is particularly timely given the recent Scope 3 report from the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). As the new brief explains, the use of ETA credits to address a company’s electricity-related supply chain emissions would likely be categorized as Scenario 3 in the framework introduced by SBTi. The world desperately needs more climate finance. Companies need better tools to cut emissions and accelerate business transformation in their supply chains. Using high-quality carbon credits to address within-value-chain emissions can fill both gaps – and bring us further and faster on the path to low-carbon prosperity.
