Yesterday, one day before the end of month deadline, Governor Newsom of California vetoed SB 1047. This bill, which was opposed by the likes of OpenAI and other tech giants, would have imposed, e.g., mandatory testing and kill switch requirements on very large and expensive LLMs. In his veto message, the Governor noted that the bill regulated only large and expensive models, and that small models could be just as dangerous. Importantly, and perhaps as a hint with regard to the type of legislation he would sign, he said that SB 1047 did not take into account whether an AI-system is being deployed into a high-risk environments. This appears to be a reference to the high risk/low risk framework adopted by the EU and Colorado in their comprehensive AI regulations. https://lnkd.in/e_i4Y9YG

Is it just me or has there been surprisingly little coverage of Harvey's recent $100 million Series C round and Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology's $900 million Series F round in the press and/or on social media since their announcements last week? https://lnkd.in/gNqN4JMh   Given that these fundraises provide a clear glimpse of:   (A) the scale of capital that is set to continue flowing into legal and legal-adjacent businesses; and (B) the accelerated rate at which notable transformation is set to take place, across the legal industry, over the next few years,   I find this eerie silence quite disconcerting.   Are people just burying their heads in the sand and HOPING that this is hype that will pass?   Or are 95% of lawyers just such busy people that they haven’t had time to form a view on how significant a milestone this is for the legal industry as a whole?   One would hope that it’s not the former – but with many MNCs (notable international law firms included) currently seeking to manage costs, and reduce global headcount, it’s highly unlikely to be the latter.   #legaltech #technology #lawfirms #lawyers #legalprofession #legalservices
