Our PhD student Que Nguyen and graduate student Jeongsik Choi successfully introduces a facile approach that combines alkali-free hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent wet impregnation to synthesize electrocatalysts based on interface engineering.Their work is a stepping stone towards further exploration of high performance green hydrogen production. Tuesday publication update! 📖 With this newest published research atomic-scale mechanisms were observed on 2D materials using our #FusionAX system! The authors imaged, atom-by-atom, the thermally induced structural evolution of twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides using in situ transmission electron microscopy. 🔥 The authors used short 0.5-s heat pulses from 100° to 1000°C and took STEM images in between to reduce thermal drift. It was observed at low temperatures that the moiré superlattices morphed into nanoscale aligned domains. It was observed that this process started by nucleating a new grain within one monolayer, its crystal orientation intricately templated by the other. 🔬Unexpectedly, the aligned domains grow through a mesmerizing dance of collective rotation of moiré supercells and the graceful hopping of 5|7 defect pairs at moiré boundaries. These observations offer unprecedented mechanistic insight into the atomic-scale interactions that govern moiré structures, illuminating the potential to pattern interfacial structure and properties of two-dimensional materials at the nanoscale. 📈These research results can be correlated to inconsistent and heterogeneous properties measured in moiré based devices. Lucideon’s material analysis suite includes electron microprobe analysis, used to determine chemical composition of small volumes of solid materials. It’s an incredibly powerful tool, especially when deployed by our skilled materials scientists, allowing for quantitative analysis and depth profiling above and beyond many competing capabilities. Our team works with the electron microprobe to do things that, for example, a scanning electron microscope simply cannot do. Microprobes use wavelength dispersal spectrometers, which offer roughly ten times greater spectral resolution compared to the energy dispersive spectrometers used in SEMs, allowing for the identification of elements that would be otherwise indistinguishable due to overlapping peaks. This quality, amongst others, mean that Lucideon is prepared for precise work in elemental mapping. Minute amounts of boron are sometimes added to steel to improve hardness and machinability, but excess amounts can settle in grain boundaries and cause issues including reduced toughness and embrittlement. Through use of the electron microprobe, we can identify quantities of boron, micron by micron, ensuring that the boron is sufficiently dispersed and present in optimum amounts to maximise performance. To evaluate the adhesive strength, therefore, it is necessary to consider both the thermal stress generated during heat curing and external loads such as tensile stress. The interfacial strength can be discussed from the stress intensity factor (SIF) of a fictitious edge interfacial crack assumed at the interface end. Happy to share our review article published today (16 Oct 2024) in Materials Science Engineering: R: Report entitle ''Innovative advances and challenges in solid oxide electrolysis cells: Exploring surface segregation dynamics in perovskite electrodes". In this article, we provides a detailed description of the chemical and electrochemical phenomena that occur in SOECs during their real operation, in relation to both internal factors (the composition of functional materials) and external aspects (gas compositions, temperature, and applied potential). An in-depth analysis of these interrelationships enables the rational selection of materials and optimization of SOEC operating conditions. Various strategies for the optimal functioning of fuel electrodes, such as doping, in-situ exsolution, and catalytic advancements, are explored. For oxygen electrodes, performance optimization strategies including the development of novel perovskite materials with tailored surface properties and the incorporation of mixed ionic-electronic conductors to facilitate enhanced oxygen ion transport and electrochemical activity, are comprehensively summarized. Moreover, a particular focus of this review is on the surface segregation behavior of perovskite electrodes, a critical aspect influencing SOEC performance and stability. Recent innovations in SOECs development aimed at mitigating surface segregation, such as doping strategies, surface treatments, and the development of novel perovskite compositions with enhanced stability, are discussed in detail for the first time. *****New Publication Alert ***** New paper in American Chemical Society’s #ACSNano journal.   “Thermodynamic and Kinetic Behaviors of Electrolytes Mediated by Intermolecular Interactions Enabling High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries”. Electrolyte solvation chemistry regulated by lithium salts, solvents, and additives has garnered significant attention since it is the most effective strategy for designing high-performance electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, achieving a delicate balance is a persistent challenge, given that excessively strong or weak Li+-solvent coordination markedly undermines electrolyte properties, including thermodynamic redox stability and Li+-desolvation kinetics, limiting the practical applications. Herein, we elucidate the crucial influence of solvent–solvent interactions in modulating the Li+-solvation structure to enhance electrolyte thermodynamic and kinetic properties. As a paradigm, by combining strongly coordinated propylene carbonate (PC) with weakly coordinated cyclopentylmethyl ether (CPME), we identified intermolecular interactions between PC and CPME using 1H–1H correlation spectroscopy. Experimental and computational findings underscore the crucial role of solvent–solvent interactions in regulating Li+-solvent/anion interactions, which can enhance both the thermodynamic (i.e., antireduction capability) and kinetic (i.e., Li+-desolvation process) aspects of electrolytes. Additionally, we introduced an interfacial model to reveal the intricate relationship between solvent–solvent interactions, electrolyte properties, and electrode interfacial behaviors at a molecular scale. This is the textbook style of review on cathode materials from my group. Even if we have been depending on crystallography to figure out the relationship between structures and electrochemical properties, we have to properly manipulate disorders for further research on layered cathode materials. We hope this new perspective can help to innovate cathode materials in the future!

The cover art depicts perovskite films on natural leaves, which can be fabricated using this method without thermal annealing.
