Port infrastructure investments provide significant returns, both in terms of economic development and job creation, as ports are key nodes in global trade, for example the France-based CMA CGM last year bought two terminals at the Port of New York and New Jersey for $2.8 billion, one of the largest in recent deals that amount to a land rush at global gateways. However, political and legal factors significantly influence the success of infrastructure and port investments. Government policies, regulatory frameworks, and geopolitical considerations can either facilitate or hinder such projects. Political stability is paramount, as frequent changes in government or policy can lead to shifts in priorities, disrupting long-term infrastructure plans. Similarly, the legal environment plays a critical role in ensuring the protection of investments. Clear and enforceable contracts, along with consistent legal standards, are necessary to minimize risks for investors. Moreover, port investments often have broader political and diplomatic implications. Ports are not only economic assets but also strategic military and geopolitical points of interest. Investments by foreign companies or governments in key ports can raise concerns over national security, sovereignty, and control over critical infrastructure. In some cases, countries may impose restrictions or seek to block foreign investment in sensitive sectors. Legal disputes over ownership, land rights, and operational control can also arise, especially when multiple stakeholders are involved. Additionally, the complexity of procurement regulations in port concessions can present challenges, corruption and favoritism are part of the maritime chessboard game. Service. Reliability. Scale of Growth. As we move closer to closing this year out and looking forward to 2025, it's been a fun "let's take a look back at 2024" for Port Jersey Logistics. For all intents and purposes, this was our first calendar year taking on an entirely new market in #Savannah leaving behind a bit of the legacy name so many Northeast businesses and importers have overlapped with at one point or another. With continuos client signatures and watching the rack and bulk positions fill what seems like daily now, it all signifies new partnerships joining the Port Jersey Family and more solutions we are able to offer our clients. What 2024 proved to our team, is the ability to grow with our customers, continue to bring our premier level of service to different markets, and continue to be a provider our partners and clients can rely on. There is no clear roadmap for 2025 but the promise of Port Jersey Logistics continuing to grow into new regions, expand our Sq. Over the past six weeks, we have witnessed persistent disruptions at the port, resulting in significant delays ⏱ and increased costs 💰 for our trucking operations. 🔄 Empty container diversions and restrictions: Daily diversions and restrictions on empty container returns have resulted in more than a third of empty containers being redirected to different locations 📍 from their original collection terminals. Looking back at 2024, analysts state that US Class I railroads have made significant strides in service reliability and resilience, positioning themselves for volume growth after several challenging years.  This year, all Class I railroads consistently delivered velocity levels surpassing historical averages, even amid a 10% overall increase in intermodal volumes in the US. Maine was the first state to set a weight limit in 1918, capping trucks at 18,000 pounds to protect roads. As the trucking industry boomed, the need for weigh stations became even more evident. Then, in 1956, the Federal-Aid Highway Act formalized weigh stations as key checkpoints across the U.S., setting up a system to regulate the size and weight of vehicles and keep roads safe and sustainable. Strategically located off highways, near state borders, and around key freight hubs, weigh stations today often use weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology. WIM sensors in the road can check a truck’s weight while it’s still moving. Compliant trucks get a green light to keep rolling, saving valuable time and energy for drivers! Weigh stations have come a long way since Maine’s first weight law over a century ago. South Jersey Ports Report Robust Activity for First Half of Year and Strategic Investments for Future Growth Strong Cargo Activity: South Jersey Ports experienced robust activity levels, with significant demand propelling operations to new heights. This includes record-breaking rail volume, highlighting the importance of rail connectivity to the overall logistics network. Year-to-date wood products cargo is more than double the volume moved in all of 2023. Steel saw a 50% increase at the Camden Terminals, while cement is 25% higher than in 2023. Overall cargo activity at the Camden Terminals is up 15%.

The #aar report ending 5/11 shows U.S. railroad weekly volume was 468,748 carloads & intermodal units, up 0.6% compared to the same week in 2023. Carloads were 209,319, down 7.0% & intermodal volume was 259,429 containers and trailers – up 7.7% compared to the same week in 2023.
