I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Boris Scharinger, the Senior Innovation Manager and Technology Strategist in the CTO Office at Siemens. In our conversation, Boris discussed his ideas, profile and how Siemens’ 175 years history that has turned great inventions into innovative technologies and the impressive scale of employees and its unwavering focus on #trends and continuous #innovation. We delved into #Industry4.0, #digitaltwins, the concept and practicalities of #metaverseenterprise, and #industrialAI. Boris highlighted the powerful impact of industrial AI Grade and its transformation in business and society: “The digital transformation of industry and AI is a strong tool. When I look into AI today, then AI is actually designed and shaped a lot from the consumer space, from the search engines, and from the social media platforms of this word. And in these environments, you can allow for a certain level rate. Yeah, in many cases 90% is good enough. However, in an industrial production process, I cannot have a robot that works in 90% of the cases. I need to have a robotic solution gripping something, for example, and putting it somewhere on a conveyor belt that really must work for me, 24 by seven must work 99.9%, and for example, it must be able to process a thousand picks per hour. Now these industrial tasks require robust reliability. This is what’s essential for industrial AI. Industrial AI, in a sense, is the application field. It’s the application of AI in industrial use cases, our quality ambition. From the press release 👇 "In a collaborative move with the W3C Consortium, Siemens and Microsoft have announced their commitment to converge the Digital Twin Definition Language (DTDL) with the Thing Description standard from international standards organization, W3C. By unifying both languages, customers are offered consistent modeling experiences, mitigating fragmentation in an evolving IoT landscape. With customers typically deploying a mix of vendors in their infrastructure leading to lock-in and high integration efforts, this convergence will allow for simpler system integration and interoperability. Siemens talks a lot about Digital Twins, Smart Factories, the Industrial Metaverse, and, of course AI. Manufacturers often ask if there’s a ‘there’ there. Is this simply marketing talk and what is Siemens doing to turn these lofty goals into a reality. We have a lot of examples that demonstrate this in action; Siemens’ collaboration with nVidia on immersive real-time visualization is a great example. However, the recently announced $10Bn acquisition of Altair might just be the clearest example yet of how serious Siemens is in this regard. Altair is a giant in AI, simulation, analytics, HPC and IoT, and I for one am extremely excited about the possibilities this opens up.
