This morning, I have the pleasure of announcing a new food waste diversion partnership between Tillamook County Creamery Association and Nutrition 101, LLC! As of last week, TCCA will no longer send finished goods waste from our national network of third-party warehouses to the landfill. Working with 101, we can now divert our finished goods waste to de-packaging facilities where the food contents are then sent to either animal feed, compost, or anaerobic digestion. As stated by the EPA, food waste contributes to 24% of landfill inputs but causes roughly 58% of methane emissions from landfills. The ethical and environmental challenges of food waste are becoming increasingly apparent as companies and governments strengthen their commitments to decreasing their impact. 10 years ago, I remember industry-wide availability of de-packaging systems in the food manufacturing sector being a worthy dream, and now it is quickly becoming the norm! Beyond that, I've seen increasing interest from farms in utilizing food manufacturing byproducts to supplement feed rations and new tech to help bring it all together. The tide is turning quickly and from my vantage there is a lot of potential to greatly reduce the amount of food waste going the landfill. At TCCA, we still have more work to do but we are quite proud of this giant leap forward. She was the winner of Starbucks' “Trail Blazer” and “Courage” awards for Innovation (championing and driving big ideas to life). As a Food Tech Evangelist at Amazon, Jill developed and trained the team on the product development process and established trained panel to guide rapid product and packaging decision making .   In 2021 she started UpCup Creations, a beverage development consulting firm. She has helped small brands bring numerous products to market from coffee beverages to cocktails in can, and many things in between. Insights prove that registered dietitians (RDs) are interested in agriculture-related sustainability, with 86% believing that dairy foods contribute to a sustainable food system. 🌎 To embrace their curiosity, Dairy West hosted engaging dialogues with agricultural experts at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics state meetings in Idaho and Utah. The panel included farmers from various agricultural sectors, including dairy, row crops, and orchards. These conversations highlighted how collaborative agriculture can advance progress towards a sustainable, equitable, and nutritious food system that will nourish future generations. Each farmer closed the session by sharing one thing they wanted dietitians to keep in mind while navigating client conversations: 1. Farmers have nothing to hide. They love to open their farms and host consumer tours anytime! 2. Farmers would never do anything to harm people, land or resources. Farmers work hard to leave the farm better than how they found it, oftentimes to pass on to future generations. 3. If a farm goes out of business, it cannot be sustainable – it is in the farmer’s best interest to take care of the land, animals and resources in their care. 4. Support local farms and purchase local. 5. We are all in this together! The more we work together and provide education alongside each other, we empower consumers to make informed, confident and competent decisions! I love it when this happens—client Grote Company's thought leadership piece, 𝘖𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘗𝘪𝘵𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘴, was featured in the June issue of Food Industry Executive. Then, it made it into the publication's Top 5 Articles of the Month as the second most-read article in June. That resulted in a 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 article. This is an example of taking owned content (a blog post published on your site) and repurposing it by turning it into earned media using a PR approach through media relations (pitching it as editorial content). Ventura Foods is a California-based joint venture between CHS and Mitsui & Co. that produces oil-based ingredients and food products for the foodservice industry. Co-owning Ventura Foods directly connects CHS farmer-owners to the food supply chain, says Todd Biedenfeld, director of vegetable oil and sunflower sales with CHS. “CHS has had incredible returns from our soy and canola processing businesses over the last few years and Ventura Foods is a large contributor to that success,” he says. “Rewards to owners traditionally end when we ship out the refined oil and meal from our facilities.
