Her success stands as a beacon of hope and progress, inspiring countless women and girls to pursue their dreams and break through the glass ceiling that has long hindered them. Last night, I checked an item off my bucket list and witnessed the aurora borealis about 40 minutes east of San Diego. While through the human eye, I could only see a pink tint to the sky, my camera revealed a more breathtaking view. This reminded me of how changing our "lens" can often transform our perspective, uncovering hidden beauty and opportunities. Whether it’s practicing gratitude, empathy, or simply being more aware, different lenses can dramatically alter our view of the world. DEI is confusing for leaders: In an environment of Black Lives Matter, the Voice, Sexual Harassment marches and legal cases + the ‘Me Too’ movement: leaders are nervous and if they are not sure, hesitate and say nothing when difference is at play. Great experience speaking to the execs at The Bowery Group in NYC yesterday morning. The biggest takeaways were: - The distinction between leadership and management - Tough on standards, not on people - Accountability starts with us as leaders and is upheld at all levels of the organization - It’s our job as leaders to adapt our communication based on what each individual responds best to - Clarity in standards, expectations, values and objectives is key to building a strong, collabortative team - Emotional intelligence and active listening are high level leadership skills - Integrate personal development into the team culture and you’ll have people who WANT to work hard for themselves, their teammates, their leaders and towards the organizational vision

I really enjoy working with new organizations on their strategic planning. It is my most favorite activity. This last 2 weekends, I worked with Culture Shock San Diego to develop their One Page Strategic Plan. It was the first time I had worked with an arts organization. The learning and growing went both ways. The Culture Shock team is thoughtful, creative and fun. The team is made up of both board members and several of the members of the leadership team. It was a great mix of individuals who knew different aspects of the nonprofit. We had great conversations on several topics, and they really dug deep when they worked on their values. They have big plans and developed a big audacious hairy goal to challenge themselves as they move forward with their growth plans. With an enthusiastic BHAG comes more aggressive fundraising goals. The team was energized and ready to tackle the plan because of the clarity, alignment and focus that was created during our 2-day sessions. At the culmination of the 2 days, they had a completed one Page Strategic Plan.  Everybody knows who is accountable and what the organization needs to do to start their exciting journey. It’s important to remember strategic planning is a journey not a destination. We live in an uncertain world, so their plan is clear but set-up to change when change is required. 🌟 Navigating Change in Organizations 🌟 At the #ShiftHappens conference, the conversations around change management left me inspired and reflective. 🔹 Change Is Hard, but Doable “Romanians find it easy to live a challenging life” was a memorable phrase I heard at the event. It rings true for Baby Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials, who have grown resilient through tough experiences like war, communism, and economic challenges. But is no longer true for younger generations How do we prepare our organization for this shift? Change is never easy. True transformation takes time—typically 1 to 3 years—and requires careful orchestration, transparency, and alignment across all levels of an organization. 🔹 Diversity and Inclusion Are Non-Negotiable As organizations recruit more talent globally, adapting strategies to ensure diversity and inclusion is essential. As Gelu Duminica pointed out brilliantly, Romania, for example, is preparing to recruit nearly 1 million workers from Asia. This shift raises important questions: • How do we prepare our organizations to welcome and integrate these new employees? • How do we adapt our business propositions to meet the unique needs and demands of this growing population? This is more than a challenge—it’s a tremendous opportunity to create new markets and drive innovation through diversity 🔹 Transformational Leadership Matters Leaders who embrace integrity, ethics, and openness create an environment where change feels achievable and inclusive. 🔹 Shiftology: The Taste of Change Whether you embrace it or resist it, change happens. WHY #WOMEN IN TOP POSITIONS ARE CHANGING THE BUSINESS WORLD TODAY While misogyny is biased to believe that men are better CEOs (or typically in leadership), that is a sweeping generalization because the world now embraces how women can add on, even do better, in some areas. Particularly at the top. Of the top 10 companies in PH, 4 of them are led by women CEOs. How? 👠They #excel in promoting #collaboration Women tend to be humbler which is indicative of their lack of self-promotion, which inspires teams to pull together. 👠They’re great in #finance and #budgeting Men may have a higher risk appetite but women are more calculating, discerning and pragmatic. Their level of discernment is high which prevents recklessness leading to hasty decisions. 👠 Their #emotionalintelligence is superb They understand that the business of business is not strategy but relationships. The are relational than transactional. 👠They’re #multidimensional Gee, this one is amazing — they access both sides of their mind with more ease, which means they can think in a linear, logical and serial manner yet still remain intuitive, holistic and creative. 👠Most importantly, they #care They care about everything: people, resources, glitches, details, execution and all. Imagine, a woman so strong that she can run an organization and still be the most important woman in the home to support her husband and raise her children? Grateful to have interacted with Mam Magnolia Uy (Petron Corporation’s AVP for Gas Stations) and Mam Sonia Madrid (Petron Dealers Association PETDA President) after I delivered a keynote message for their Mindanao Convention held in Davao recently, with close to 300 franchisees. As I listened to these 2 ladies - I was captivated by their humble beginnings and passionate dedication to ensure that their people are served to the fullest. #purposepassionperformance #leadership

The #NOWconference at University of California, Berkeley has come to an end, and I feel deeply connected with everyone I coached, both individually and in groups. I'm humbled and I feel that we're all in this together, and a little support and empathy can go a long way. Here are some of my top takeaways from coaching these incredible individuals from the UC community: 🌱 Embrace Vulnerability: Many participants showed that true strength comes from being open and honest about our challenges. It’s empowering to acknowledge our vulnerabilities and use them as a foundation for growth. 🎉 Celebrate Small Wins: Progress is often made in small steps. Recognizing and celebrating these achievements keeps us motivated and reminds us that we are moving forward. 📈 Cultivate a Growth Mindset: The willingness to learn and adapt was a common trait among the attendees. Embracing a growth mindset allows us to see challenges as opportunities for improvement and innovation. 🧘‍♀️ Prioritize Self-Care: It's clear that taking care of our mental and physical well-being is essential. Practices like mindfulness, regular exercise, and taking breaks can significantly enhance our productivity and happiness. 🤝 Nurture Community Connections: The sense of community at the conference was inspiring. Building strong, supportive relationships is crucial for personal and professional development, as we can achieve so much more together than alone. These reflections remind me of the incredible power and resilience within the UC community, filling me with admiration and gratitude. I thank all those people who chose to share their journeys with me. I feel incredibly blessed to have played a small part in your growth and transformation. Because I’m an Exceedingly Important Person, I was being interviewed by a journalist last week. (And also, partially, because the Seattle Museum of History & Industry is doing a retrospective of the TV show I produced here for 15 years, "Almost Live!".) During the interview, I recalled that the TV station I worked for at the time—KING-TV—was widely considered to be one of the best—if not THE best—local TV stations in the country. In fact, when I would go to national broadcast events, and people found out I worked for KING, they would say things like, “Oh my god, you are SOOOO lucky!” “I always wanted to work for them!” “Do they have any openings? I’ll do ANYTHING!” Why these responses? Because KING was known for being one of the most innovative TV stations in the business. That reputation made it a magnet for top talent, both on-screen and off. Flash forward to today, and it seems like everyone is having trouble attracting, recruiting, and retaining top talent. I hear it all the time, and I’m sure you do too. Maybe you’re even experiencing this in your business. The solution is not difficult to fathom. Top people, smart people, innovative people want to work with and for organizations that are doing exciting things, meaningful things, innovative things.
