Agency Owners: Let's talk margins! Here’s one simple rule you need to follow if you want to grow your agency… We work with a lot of agencies - marketing, creative, production, web dev Here’s what I’ve noticed: Agencies *need* 50% gross margins. If your labor costs are eating up more than 50% of your revenue, there won't be enough left to cover operational costs, let alone invest in growth. It’s not just about the cost of tools, subscriptions, or occasional expenses that pile up. Or the variable revenue month to month. Eventually, you'll need to hire for roles that don’t directly generate revenue—think operations, HR, marketing, etc. These hires are crucial for scaling, but they’ll have a huge impact on your costs without increasing income (at first). If your margins aren't healthy enough to absorb them, they’ll kill your profitability. The best thing you can do for your agency is keep your labor costs in check and plan ahead for the impact of future hires on your bottom line. Oh, and if you haven't raised your prices in 2+ years, start there.
