All In Sport Consulting in partnership with Stitch Marketing Research and Huddle Up Group, LLC announced today that the total economic impact of adapted and para sport-related events nationwide totaled approximately $143.9 million in 2023. The latest economic impact study findings, demonstrate an increase of approximately 3.45 percent over last year’s findings, reflecting consistent growth of the industry in the United States. The latest findings from The Pulse of the Golf Consumer report reveal a significant upswing in golf's popularity. 📊 Key Insights: ⛳️123 million Americans engaged with golf last year in various forms, marking a 14% increase over five years. ⛳️An impressive 95% of core golfers are planning to play as much or more in 2024. ⛳️The female golf segment is showing particularly strong growth, with a 25% increase in participation over the last four years. ⛳️Social media continues to be a powerful platform for golf, with over 50 million Americans consuming golf-related content. "Daily Did You Know?" The Atlanta Braves in the Major League Baseball (MLB) has been sponsored by RaceTrac since 2014. In 2017, they introduced a campaign called "#BeatTheFreeze" that has been #HugelySuccessful with some calling it the #BestTradition in the #MLB- it's even spawned action figures! #TheCampaign - Between innings at their home games, an #AtlantaBraves fan had the chance to out run "The Freeze" over approx 180m. The fan was given a significant head start, and then The Freeze tried (and usually succeeded) to chase down the fan. It lead to hilarious tumbles, edge of the seat finishes with The Freeze only beaten a handful of times. #UsainBolt has even got involved on social media saying '#TheFreeze was too fast for him'. Its generated massive social media followings, viral clips, as well as major broadcasts highlighting this race live and on repeat (see the 'best of' clip below)! Plus it all started as a small low investment and creative idea (along with using the assets it had 😉)! The secret sauce to this amazing campaign was the asset the Braves had i.e. Nigel Talton, a former high school & college track (athletics for the non-Americans amongst us) sprinter who had run a blistering 10.47s for a 100m. #Talton happened to be on the ground crew team for the Braves and when they discovered Talton's elite background, the campaign was born and the rest is history. Talton retired as #TheFreeze in 2023 after sprinting for 6 yrs and the Braves jokingly put up a job ad for his replacement in March 2024. Many of the high-profile macro trends discussed across media platforms deal specifically with the 70 current P4/Autonomous 4 schools. These are schools with athletic budgets between $100M and $250M (a startling range for "like-minded" schools). These groups currently account for roughly 35,000 athletes. A large number, but only about 7% of students that participate in college sports. There were a number of headlines, speculation, etc., last week that the House vs. NCAA settlement will result in fewer opportunities for college athletes. Financial pressures will probably make that a reality for the P4 schools. But as Dr. Steve Dittmore, PhD, explores in this article, athletic opportunities may be growing among the 93 percent other schools. Many DIII schools are experiencing other financial challenges (geographic headwinds, the long-rumored "enrollment cliff," etc., but athletics is still seen as a way to drive enrollment, engage the student body, etc. Watching the data and trends will be important as we are undoubtedly headed to a new governance structure for college sports. Diamond Sports Group’s bankruptcy case appears to be nearing a conclusion after more than 18 months. The regional sports broadcaster recently disclosed plans to shed 11 of the 12 Major League Baseball (MLB) team contracts held this past season as part of its reorg (including four that expired). Those clubs must now renegotiate terms with DSG or find an alternative local distribution solution for 2025 and beyond (note: Diamond remains contractually obligated to five). The latter does not necessarily mean a hard pivot from the established pay TV ecosystem. In fact, baseball, appears to be advising its clubs to remain in the cable bundle. While counter to the media narrative, it has become directionally obvious that guaranteed affiliate fee economics are the surest way to preserve local media revenues–even if the team’s new channel gets tiered and/or commands a lower sub fee than budget for (and after accounting for the macro decline in distribution). MLB would like to see its clubs supplement local cable television distribution with a direct-to-consumer streaming option (and perhaps a small number of OTA games). The league views that combination as the best approach to maximize reach and revenue. Most organizations look to be taking the direction. It was recently announced that MLB will handle production and distribution for the Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, and Minnesota Twins moving forward. The league has managed both for the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, and Colorado Rockies the last two years.
