The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced selections totaling $142 million for 123 small business projects for research in multiple areas, including clean energy and decarbonization. We are thrilled to share that the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) has selected Ozark Integrated Circuits, Inc. for a grant of $1.1 million to advance our work on high-temperature flow rate instruments for geothermal reservoir monitoring using the Ozark IC eXtreme Node® (or XNode®) single board computer, which can operate in the extreme conditions experienced in Energy Exploration, Aerospace, Space Exploration, and Industrial Controls. This project tackles the challenges of increasing reliability and functionality of high temperature electronics, specifically in fracture zone management. The Department of Energy has funded $6 million in research projects for an inaugural partnership in two DOE offices to better prepare the nation for multiple disruptive power events and enable rapid response in a crisis for U.S. grid operators. DOE’s Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) and DOE’s Office of Electricity (OE) will guide the research at five of the nation’s national laboratories in a new partnership. The need for faster computing of the vast amount of data on the grid will be addressed. Current power grids don't have the flexibility to support the energy transition and updating them will take years. PJM issued a Hot Weather Alert with expected temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s over the next 10 days. To ensure grid reliability during this hot spell, the alert is in effect from June 17 through June 21, and may be extended based on updated forecasts. This alert prepares transmission and generation operators for significant increases in electricity demand. However, PJM Interconnection’s currently has the generation capacity and transmission capability to meet the expected demand on the system during the heat wave, but extended periods of extreme heat does have the potential to stress the electric system and cause reliability challenges. It's interesting to note that in comparison to 2023, on the solar side, the biggest projects include the 427 MW Fox Squirrel Solar Farm, 150 MW phase of the Fox Squirrel Solar Farm, which will have 577 MW of capacity once fully operational later this year, however, the 325 MW AEUG Union Solar Project in Union County, Ohio is expected to support the grid this summer. The 2023 Cumulative Capacity of the renewables in PJM was around 220,827 MW, and they plan to add over 10,000 MW in the following years wherein 95% of the projects are all renewable generation sources. Solar energy will definitely play a key role this summer.

🚨 We are excited about the insights discussed in "Reducing Energy Burden in the Power Sector: Metrics for Assessing Energy Poverty," published in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) latest issue of Power and Energy Magazine, "Equity and Justice in Power Systems: The Power Systems Field Meets "Environmental Justice." ✒ Authored by Destenie Nock, PhD, Andrew J. Jones Jr., PhD, ENV SP, Stefan Bouzarovski, Harriet Thomson, and Dominic Bednar, Ph.D., EIT. 🔗The paper is available at https://lnkd.in/egFHbezR, 🔓The open-access version is available at https://lnkd.in/dQ7MmDj4. The paper explains how energy burden and other metrics can be used to support decision-making within the power sector. The authors describe present-day challenges of only using energy burden and a push for practitioners to "break down" the components of residential energy demand to identify barriers and adequate levels of consumption. As the United States continues to push for policies such as Justice40, there are many lessons that can be learned from the European Union regarding the integration of energy burden into practice, methodological caveats, and direct and indirect consequences. The following actions were recommended: 1️⃣ weatherization, 2️⃣ community engagement, and 3️⃣ residential technology deployments. The authors also provided action steps for practitioners: 💡 Tracking the impacts of energy investments through the use of high-resolution data (e.g., demographic surveys and AMI), 💡 Support weatherization efforts, 💡 Leverage existing relationships with the community, 💡 Tie incentives of infrastructure and technology upgrades to the electric meter and 💡Develop a baseline for sufficient energy and evaluate if households are experiencing energy deficits. A new investment from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is "a crucial action for both near- and long-term transmission planning to enable clean energy deployment." CATF's Nicole Pavia comments on DOE's announcement of a $1.5 billion investment in four important transmission projects.   The funding comes as part of a second round of funding from the $2.5 billion Transmission Facilitation Program, a revolving fund that facilitates construction of electricity transmission lines using capacity contracts, public private partnerships, or loans. REsurety's Lee Taylor is a contributor on the policy brief: Assessing the Impact of Voluntary Actions on the Grid, that was published today from RMI with other contributors from National Renewable Energy Laboratory, WattTime.org and Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). Summary: The urgency of the climate crisis is leading many large energy consumers to consider how they can more accurately assess the impacts of various potential actions on grid decarbonization. This paper provides an overview of the ZEROgrid Impact Advisory Initiative’s collective findings on consequential impact and reliability assessments, their implications, and areas where further research is required. Our recent report for the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) reveals that PJM must reform its interconnection processes to keep up with the growing demand for clean energy projects. With over 2,700 projects and 290 GW of capacity in the backlog, delays could hinder progress on economic growth and emissions reductions across the region. Utilizing Surplus Interconnection Service (SIS), endorsed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and successfully employed by other grid operators, would unlock billions in investments, create jobs, and help states meet their clean energy targets faster. Great overview by Gridmatic on the differences in battery #energystorage bidding behavior between California ISO and ERCOT https://bit.ly/40TRBEv "A significant portion of CAISO’s revenue comes from Day-Ahead Energy, whereas it remains relatively small in ERCOT. Several factors contribute to this difference, including obligations for storage resources with resource adequacy contracts, Default Energy Bid (DEB) complexities, and CAISO’s methods of awarding ancillary services based on State of Charge (SOC) expectations. Comparing individual systems in ERCOT and CAISO, we see that ERCOT batteries primarily rely on ancillary services throughout the day, while CAISO batteries need Day-Ahead Energy to ensure they are cleared for higher-value RegUp and RegDn awards."
