EVERYDAY I'M WATCHIN' Yes, Pay TV and Broadcast are losing subscribers and viewers, while Streaming continues to gain both. However, those who DO use traditional TV, use it much more often. This is ratified by a recent survey I fielded with Publishers Clearing House (PCH) Media on which television services are used daily versus those used periodically. 👇 Subscribers of Pay TV are 2X as likely to use their services EVERYDAY than audiences of #SVOD or #FAST. All the data I've seen - from sources such as diverse as PCH, Comscore, Inc., Nielsen, Kantar Media, and Barb Audiences - indicates that while Streaming is widespread, it is periodic. And even though traditional TV skews older, even with younger audiences, it is far more habitual. It is still the preferred daily use-case. In fact, with growth of products like #FAST, YouTube, SVOD bundling, and the wav of MyFree on DIRECTV, there's every indication that the traditional TV experience has every chance of (get this) TRANSFORMING into the future of TV - even for younger consumers. But, like the old joke about the lightbulb and the psychiatrist, the people who RUN TV must really WANT to transform it. This week Comcast stuck a fork in a big chunk of its traditional TV, while shaving off just enough of it to keep one foot on either side of the divide. This is not the kind of innovation or transformation the industry needs, it's financial engineering for short term stock price improvement, at the expense of venerable brands and likely thousands of jobs. It appears WBD is wrangling towards the same dark horizon. But this short term view is not limited to traditional players. This week, I argued on the BBC Radio's The Media Show, that, with their boxing matches, football games, and scripted wrestling show, Netflix is now, squarely, simply, an old-school television channel - one that can't handle the basics of the broadcast business it's trying to build, like live sports nor advertising. https://bbc.in/4fY6k5r I also posited, in this very space, that this month is the moment mainstream media forever ceded its prominence in global culture to the Creator Sphere. https://lnkd.in/gJefffic Let's all be honest with each other, for once: The last great innovation in television was in 2007, when Netflix started streaming. We've tweaked shit here and there since, we've added TONS of services, we've made some minor improvements to our interfaces... And THEN we bloated the user experience into a nearly unnavigable tower of babel, rife with the paradox of choice, that confuses and frustrates both our users and our advertisers - to the point of exodus. IF TV as we know it dies, it is NOT consumer behavior that'll kill it - our own stubborn innovation stagnation will. Have a nice weekend! ☮

"Cable TV-style streaming bundling" Comcast, the No. 2 (and once No. 1) cable TV in the U.S., has turned to streaming as a way out of the crisis. You're offering a discounted streaming bundle to Xumo internet subscribers (TV). Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said at an event that internet subscribers can now get discounts on core streaming, including "Peacock, AppleTV+, and Netflix. Comcast called this product "Streamsaver". But now that the viewing trend has shifted to streaming, the product could be a "cable saver." Of course, bundles are also important for streaming providers, who can only compete with Netflix if they band together. The timing of the service is also exquisite. Yo, this CBS Morning news saga is absolute madness. Puck Article: https://lnkd.in/eVgS7mVT How did this interview cause so much professional strife? While I know we all have our own ideas about the subject matter discussed in the interview at the center of this "scandal", the interview was relatively civil, devoid of name-calling, and informative. You cannot like the questions, the answers, or the tone from which they manifested, but the discourse was, at the very least, instructional. This, of all the wild things in the article about the fallout of this interview, was the craziest to me: "The network’s Standards and Practices division, led by Claudia Milne, determined that Dokoupil had not followed the preproduction process wherein questions are run through Race and Culture and Standards and Practices." Listen, I'm a black man and a former journalist. The idea of hiring anyone—let alone million-dollar news anchors—that requires so much coddling that, in turn, you feel the need to screen their on-air questions for any kind of an 'ism' should be mind-boggling to us all. I get it. We're in a simulation with heightened sensitivity right now. It is a simulation, right? But we can't be that obtuse. If people who are paid to speak on TV can't be trusted to speak on TV, then let's just cut to the end of the simulation where we all trade our voices for speaker implants and let the algorithms do the talking. If we can’t trust professionals to handle a civil conversation on the news and deal with the fallout (better than this), then why even bother discussing it?

My first partnerships role was fifteen years ago. Since then, technology changes have move partnerships into the spotlight. Partnership staffing has to change.... In my first partnerships role at Tandberg Television, maybe fifteen years ago, life was simpler. We had two types of partners. Resellers and Integrators. Even then, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. Half the job was logistics, the actual shipping of millions of dollars worth of hardware internationally. Sometimes with real challenges getting to the 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 of the world. Now business is virtualised, software defined and not so linear. It's more complex. In recent years, data became core to all businesses. Now AI is coming at us, a freight train racing down the tracks towards us. Both act as 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆. The three biggest changes have been: • Software first • The end of end to end • The dominance of cloud marketplaces Moving from linear workflows to complex architectures has killed end to end solutions. We now have the 'ecosystem'. A 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲-𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁-𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 which rarely has a home in organisations today. Cloud marketplaces bring completely new ways to buy and sell. Completely, to the point where you need to be taught how it works. To the point where the most successful cloud ISV partners develop, market and 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆. Welcome specialist partnership roles No longer is there just a 'partnership manager'. This is a buzzy article about the titans who lead the streaming companies. By the way, they are all white men, which is sort of odd in 2024. Anyhoo - some interesting takeaways for us as consumers or people selling into the streaming universe, which is all traditional TV is now. 1. 200 million is the new number. That's the number of subscribers needed to run a profitable service. Netflix, Prime, and Disney are there. 2. Ads are growing - and probably the only way to make TV work long-term. 3. The HBO model of critical successes that makes you want to pay - is declining. It's all about weekly/monthly engagement. 4. So - with that in mind. You need sports. 5. You need shows that don't win awards but are great light entertainment. 6. When the shakeout is done, all anyone knows is Netflix will be the king of the mountain. For us Canadians, it seems clear - for originals, it's highly local stuff that can scale globally, and it better be cheap. (Squid Games is the #1 show on Netflix ever - and it didn't come from the LA system). Or we can be a great branch plant economy for Hollywood—which we already are—with skilled technicians and lower overall costs. And if you care about English Canadian culture - I wonder whether something more radical is in order. No matter how well-meaning or skilled commissioners are at Bell, Rogers Communications, CBC or what's left of Corus Entertainment you can't afford many new shows. And you only get hits by making lots of shows. One radical idea - how about providing a creators fund? - similar to what Tik Tok or Youtube have offered in the past. If you're a Canadian citizen or permanent resident here's a $5000 grant to make stuff this year and try to make a go of it. If the IP goes anywhere here's a higher tier - say $20,000 - to develop it with a Canadian producer to try and sell it somewhere. We need to move to guerrilla tactics in the content wars. Thank you to everyone for the incredible enthusiasm you brought to our Booth at the National Association of Broadcasters. This year's event had a significant focus on #AI, but many found that a lot of #AI tools were still in their infancy and not quite ready for the big stage. However, CaraOne, with its six years of development, stood out from the crowd. The industry's comments echoed throughout our booth all day long. Manufacturers of two major editing platforms told us that Scale Logic and CaraOne came up over and over again at their booth so wanted to see for themselves. Autodesk Adobe Several Major Networks came in multiple times stating this was by far the best use of AI they have seen on the show floor. Major Studios also commented on the incredible time savings this will bring to their teams, stating over 70% of their editors time is spent searching for content and CaraOne will allow them to spend 70% of their time editing. Finally, one of our latest paying corporate customers gave us feedback and said after two days of CaraOne watching our content, my editor was able to find content from 20 years back in seconds. When John Landgraf talks, I tend to listen. The Mayor of Television who coined the term “Peak TV” as the long time CEO of FX, Landgraf appeared at Variety‘s Business Managers Breakfast this past week espousing old-school TV shows ‘along the lines of procedural dramas and multi camera sitcoms fell far out of favor with the creative community… but viewers never gave up on these tried and true forms,’ per Variety’s own coverage. We dug into this shift in programming format a couple weeks ago (https://lnkd.in/gTdswjCq), reflecting the increased viewership and cultural resonance of shows like the rebooted Matlock, Happy Place and High Potential. To further anchor this, our friends at National Research Group did a deep dive into why audiences are returning to older content like Sex in the City, Friends, Suits or Gilmore Girls, citing a number of factors that I think execs like Landgraf are seeking to instill into their new programming, namely: comfort (literally the study cites the ‘reduction in anxiety’ as a top reason for choosing older content), consistent quality, good for background viewing. Just connecting the simple dots here - broadcast-like content created for (nearly) everyone that is easy to digest, significantly lowers decision fatigue and provides the mostly-mindless TV viewing experience our parents hemmed-and-hawed about endlessly throughout the whole later half of the 20th century. And for the networks - a show that runs five to ten seasons that can be licensed again and again and again and again providing tangible, high margin economic value for decades.
