This event was put together by me to bring a professional conference to middle school girls, “Girls Changing the World through Information Technology: IT Conference for Middle School Girls”. As you may know, women areunderrepresented in the STEM fields; our intent was to raise awareness in young girls to have careers in computer Technologies. The conference, held on May 30th, 2015 was attended by 54 girls of ages 11-13 years from Montgomery County Public Schools. The conference featured a keynote speaker, Ms. Ashley Holtz; Ashley is a programmer in DC specializing in security and forensics. She has worked on investigations, written closed and open source forensic software, and does research in artificial intelligence. She also teaches women and girls how to code and educates kids about technology careers. She spoke about, variety of interesting careers in IT realm. Also, spoke to our young audience about “Pros and Cons” of social media. There were breakout sessions that included hands on building their own web page, how to use Excel formulas to engage young girls and spark their curiosity in computer technologies at an early age. Our goal was to send most important message to our upcoming generation of young girls that they, too, can become computer engineers, programmers, or information technology specialists.
