I've seen lots of presentations about reviews, but I didn't feel that any of them really defined the review problem(s). And if you don't define a problem, you can't develop solutions. Between reuse and generative AI, tech writers will produce even more content for review in future. This trend makes it even more important to figure out how to ensure that our final content is reliable. Since no-one else has given me the answers, I will be leading a workshop on the challenges of review at tcworld 2024. I think that I have some interesting insights, and I look forward to getting insights from the workshop participants too. The four key principles of copyediting. The very first for me is to always double check. A good copyeditor is an eternal student, always ready to doubt themselves and learn.

As technical writers working with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), you should consider the following: - SMEs are often busy people. Be proactive by conducting research, and creating a draft outline before seeking input. - Regular Check ins: Follow up or subtle nudges are also important. You have a goal to meet, sometimes the SME doesn’t have the same goal or KPI as you, checking in will help you stay on track. - Recognitions and credits: You worked or collaborated with someone on a project, what’s stopping you from giving credit where possible? This also makes it easy for collaboration in the future with same SME or potential SMEs who might be watching from afar. - Use collaborative tools like google docs for easy collaboration. TIP: Please remember to state what kind of feedback you’re looking to get, also do not forget to give comment or edit access to your document before reaching out for feedback, as this can be annoying to ask for access always. This is similar to my own experiences while running the Panorama Project, where some individual publishers — and even more individuals within their organizations — were willing to explore ways to collaborate, but most hid behind trade associations that refuse to seriously engage libraries as valued partners. While CDL has often been misrepresented by publishers and some library-adjacent organizations with their own agendas, it can be a mutually beneficial option in specific instances. That'll never happen as long as publishers' default stance is that libraries are the enemy. Meanwhile, next week, dozens of publishers will be in San Diego declaring their love for libraries, which really just means all the free marketing they provide despite regularly being treated like pirates. #libraries #publishing #ebooks #cmonson
