Not as direct as hostile ableism, harder to spot coming, but no less damaging to career potential and ambition. When is Art a threat? Art Therapists need to advocate when untrained, unqualified organizations and practitioners jeopardize Art Therapy consumers, and displace the very Art Therapists trained to serve them. One way to advocate, as I am at this moment, is to provide public comment in program Chats in a grantmaking webinar, "Creative Collaborations: Unlocking the Power of Community Arts Partnerships" (hosting no actual Creative Arts Therapists): "CAN YOU do whatever you want? Creative Forces is based on using credentialed Creative Arts Therapists. If you are providing art and healing programs, the American Art Therapy Association designates that the "minimum credential" is an Art Therapy Master's degree. The identified populations are "traumatized Veterans," even if there's a choice not to make healthcare diagnoses/diseases, such as SUD. My question is why does Creative Forces not endorse the same standard of using credentialed 8-year trained, registered, certified and licensed Creative Arts Therapists for what is defined as "Art Therapy" and "Art Therapy services," in many places? In other words, why can't the grants support simply Artists providing wonderful Art classes?" In a study published recently in the journal Psychological Science, researchers found that loneliness follows a U-shaped curve: Starting from young adulthood, self-reported loneliness tends to decline as people approach midlife, only to rise again after the age of 60, becoming especially pronounced by around age 80. Guided by the principles of a trauma-informed approach, our work at the Clear Language Lab seeks to communicate with people in ways that honor their experiences, reduce harm, and seek to correct historical and contemporary injustices. Before healing from trauma can really happen, we need to be safely associated to the body or ‘somatized’. And for this to happen, often safety has to first arise within a relational dynamic. Im really looking forward to teaching ‘Trauma-informed Relational Somatics’ in LA this September (module 1) and next February (module 2). If you’re a therapsit, coach, bodyworker or healthcare practitioner, this is an integrative professional development training that will support you to understand the somatic and relational componinets of trauma in a new way and inspire a dynamic shift in the way you undertand and support your clients/patients. This is the first time the training will be offered on the West Coast, and I’m looking forward to meeting the group that gathers to do this deep work. Note, this is an experiential training, so be prepared to not only learn, but to experience and process. I just finished Ryan M. Niemiec's The Mindfulness and Character Strengths Workbook and have posted a detailed review on Somatic Psychotherapy Today's website. It was an eye opening experience weaving in character strengths with mindfulness practices. The workbook was written to provide a hands on workbook for general readers interested in mindfulness and character strengths and for practitioners leading Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice groups. When I reviewed Ryan textbook, Character Strengths Interventions: A Field Guide for Practitioners, in 2017, I noted the need for hands-on activities for readers to use, access to audio meditations, and so forth. And here we have it: The Mindfulness and Character Strengths Workbook is everything I hoped for and more. It is a well-written, easy-to-follow, detailed to the nth degree workbook with extensive, free online materials to support the process including audio-guided meditations. Congratulations Ryan on a much-needed workbook to support people exploring character strengths and their integration with mindfulness.
