So, Mukesh Bansal is back with another startup this time with Mohit Gupta, the former CEO of Zomato's food delivery arm. In July of last year, there were reports about Bansal and Gupta raising funds for a new venture. 🚨 Health Alert for Founders 🚨 I want to share a personal experience that recently gave me a new perspective on health, especially for us founders who are always on the go. Last week, I faced an unexpected setback. A case of food poisoning led to hospitalization, reminding me of the critical importance of health in our relentless pursuit of success. I have always put my health a priority with regular check ups and asking the oddest questions to doctors in my circle to learn. But this illness was despite my best efforts. I feel as founders we often do not allow us sick days or wellness days in fear that work will pile up. The experience this week was harrowing to say the least. There were some saving graces, true to the founder way I choose to live and learn. 👫 Support System: I was overwhelmed by the support from my friends, who stepped in like family. Their help during this time was invaluable, and it highlighted how crucial it is to have a strong support network. A doctor friend came in in wee hours of the morning to help. Another came to help me get discharged. Many more offered much needed mental support. Just their kind words got me through the 5 days. 🏠 Cherishing Home-Cooked Meals: This incident reaffirmed my belief in the benefits of home-cooked meals, which is also a cornerstone of our brand philosophy at The Indus Valley. Research supports this too; cooking at home is not only a strategy to comply with U.S. dietary guidelines but also leads to a healthier diet overall. Day 1: Embracing the Startup Journey I'm excited to start sharing more about the wild ride that is leading a startup. I've been thinking about this for a while, but I had some fear about putting myself out there and the judgement that comes with it. The emotional side of entrepreneurship is fascinating to me and I've really enjoyed watching others share their journey. For my first post, I want to share one of the best pieces of advice I've gotten since diving into entrepreneurship: Sometimes, the best way to move forward is not to move at all, but to pause and reassess. It's a simple idea, but it’s been a game-changer for me. In the hectic world of startups, it's easy to get lost in the endless to-do lists and urgent tasks. But taking a step back to reflect has helped me spot the real opportunities and figure out what’s actually holding me back from making the most of them. Try and get out of the weeds of the day-to-day grind, and slow down so that you can speed up. If you're on this journey too, I'd love to hear about it. What advice has guided you? #FoundersFirst2024 edition done this week. I always take time to get back to the digital world, after meeting so many founders in person! f2f will never go out of fashion! Small, curated meet-ups are always energizing. It was an absolute pleasure to host Arvind Nahata in the opening session. Even while we connected before the session, Arvind's candid and honest approach to conversations was refreshing. 30 mins felt short, as there was so much to learn as #founders, from #fouunders who have built companies from the trenches. For me the key takeaways: 1. Start a company with clear focus on value creation - this could be small to start with, but a well defined product, with clear customer segmentation is key. Saying no to opportunities helps create focus. 2. Trust Over Agreements: Decimal technologies still does not have #founderagreements. It is rare in these times for such trust. While is has worked well for them, where they had a great chemistry, understanding and boundaries defined, I am still a proponent of having a #foundersagreement to start with. Always helps in times of conflict. 3. Lessons in Grit: The company scaled as they saw new opportunities open up. A very first principle approach - something as a founder I completely stand by. They digitized Amul, crafted solutions for NBFCs, and redefined speed in enterprise tech. "What do you do for work?" A simple question I used to answer with my corporate title and company name. But now, as a startup founder, explaining my work has become more nuanced and, to be honest, sometimes awkward. How do I convey what I do? How do I make them understand the value I create? Over the years, I've refined my approach, taking cues from pitching to investors. As a startup founder, each moment is potential pitch. Here’s the formula that has worked for me: 1️⃣ Talk about the problem I solve 2️⃣ Explain how I solve this problem and mention who benefits (industry/customer names) 3️⃣ Share the story behind the solution Here’s my friendly introduction pitch for the weekend parties/bars: "Do you know how critical it is for manufacturers to detect defects? Even a single defect can create havoc. My startup provides a solution that enables manufacturers to detect defects quickly, saving them millions. My co-founder and I, after years of working in quality control, had an 'aha' moment when he suggested, 'Just click a picture, and you'll know everything you need.' This idea fascinated me and sparked our journey SmartViz Pte Ltd. We launched a year and a half ago and now have customers in the automotive, defense, and precision engineering industries. We're loving every moment of it." This approach often leads to engaging conversations, potential investors, customers, and unexpected opportunities.
