A great interview between two of India's leading entrepreneurs. Nikhil Kamath and Nandan Nilekani. They discuss a variety of topics, and their insights are sure to be of interest to anyone who is interested in the future of India and the opportunities for entrepreneurs in the country. It is also a great opportunity to learn more about these two successful entrepreneurs and their views on the future of India. Some of the best moments in this interview to me are 1. When Nandan talks about his time at Infosys. Nandan co-founded Infosys in 1981 and worked there for many years. He talks about the company's early days and how it helped to establish Bangalore as a tech city. 2. When Mr Kamath asks Nandan about the India Stack. The India Stack is a set of open APIs and standards that allow developers to build innovative applications on top of government-provided services. Nandan believes that the India Stack is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to build new businesses. 3. When Nandan talks about the future of technology. Nandan believes that the future of technology will be driven by artificial intelligence (AI). He also believes that there is a lot of potential for entrepreneurs to develop new technologies that can help India transition to a more sustainable energy economy. 4. Hiring a Cautious Approach In 2023 and into 2024, the #Indiantech and #serviceindustries have been grappling with the challenge of balancing #growth versus #profitability, which has led to widespread layoffs and a more cautious hiring approach. This situation is being driven by a combination of global economic uncertainty, market corrections, and #changesininvestorsentiment. Instead of large-scale hiring, companies are focusing on #selectiverecruitment in areas such as AI, machine learning, cloud services, and cybersecurity, where they see growth opportunities. The demand for #datascience and #cloudcomputing experts has remained strong despite overall cuts. With the shift towards automation, the need for large manual workforces has diminished. Companies are increasingly investing in #GenAi, #AI and #machine learning trained workforce to streamline operations, reducing the need for certain roles and functions. The Indian tech and service sectors have entered a period of cautious expansion, with profitability now a key driver for growth. Companies that were previously rewarded for aggressive scaling now face pressure to reduce costs, optimize operations, and show profitability. Layoffs and selective hiring will continue in the near term, especially as companies navigate #globaleconomicuncertainty and #risingoperationalcosts.

I had the privilege of joining an insightful discussion on ‘Bridging the AI skill gap’ with Dr. Shalini Lal and Shirin Rai Gupta.
