In my opinion, this is one of the lesser discussed disruptions that we will experience in this decade. While widespread availability and economies of scale are yet to be fully figured out, this has enormous potential to reinvent last mile logistics, transportation and also road safety. Marques Brownlee -aka MKBHD's 41-second review and the fall of a $230M AI startup. It took less than a minute for MKBHD to share his skepticism about the Humane AI Pin, a new entry in the wearable tech market with a price tag of $700 and a $24 monthly subscription. Towards his review, he couldn't find any added value to the product. The aftermath is rapid: - Social media bad buzz - Absolutely not recommended for purchase Conclusion: 1/ The hype of startups 🦄: Especially in tech, they operate under immense pressure. With investors pouring millions into what they hope will be the next big thing, the stakes are incredibly high. 2/ The creator economy and its influence 🤳🏽: This is a prime example of the creator economy’s impact on traditional business models, especially in technology. Influencers and content creators like MKBHD have an enormous power. Their opinions can validate or condemn products overnight, influencing not only consumer behavior but also investor confidence and market dynamics. 🫸🏽 Don't build before you talk to people. Waymo's co-CEO taught me something unexpected about market choices: The so-called 'simple' path can lead to a massive dead end. That's why Waymo avoided what many believed was the obvious route — autonomous trucking. It seems like it should be the reverse. Autonomous trucking focuses on highways because there are: • Fewer variables • Less complexity • Straightforward routes • More predictable conditions • Fewer pedestrians, etc It sounds logical, right? But here's the reality of it: Highway accidents at 70mph with 20x the mass are catastrophic. The margin for error is almost zero. And, the trucks still have to eventually navigate into cities to pick up and drop off deliveries. Meanwhile, Waymo took the "harder" route. They focused on urban environments with: • Unpredictable pedestrians • Complex intersections • Endless variables Now it provides over 100,000 paid rides each week. By solving the long tail of possible scenarios the cars can encounter, they’ve catapulted ahead. And it’s just getting started. So what’s the lesson here? Starting with the "harder" problem can be smarter than taking shortcuts when the less hard version is a false proxy for the real thing. It means you: 1. Build robust solutions 2. Tackle core challenges head-on 3. Develop deeper expertise 4. Create transferable technology Waymo's journey since 2009 proves it: • Started in complex urban environments • Built sophisticated systems • Created resilient technology • Achieved real-world success Meanwhile, highway-focused companies are still struggling with the "easier" problem. The takeaway for startups: Don't chase the easy path. Chase the right path. Sometimes, embracing complexity early leads to simpler solutions later on.

Probably the most current poll, which shows that 52% of Americans currently own or are at least considering an EV for their next vehicle. Interesting (to me), are the demographic aspects that basically show less interest among those older, poorer, or conservative. That's especially understandable if you're poor, since there are a dearth of affordable options in the US at this point in time. Adoption is currently highest among the upper and middle income brackets, among the young and then middle aged, and among those who skew liberal. And, of course, among those who're worried about climate change. Regardless, if you're older it's apparent you're less likely to embrace this particular change. And those who're conservative are simply less likely to embrace any change, by definition.

Paul Graham’s article on ‘Founder Mode’ versus ‘Manager Mode’ for managing a company is spot on! It aligns closely with what Peerdom facilitates. "In effect there are two different ways to run a company: founder mode and manager mode. Till now most people even in Silicon Valley have implicitly assumed that scaling a startup meant switching to manager mode. But we can infer the existence of another mode from the dismay of founders who've tried it, and the success of their attempts to escape from it. There are as far as I know no books specifically about founder mode. Business schools don't know it exists. All we have so far are the experiments of individual founders who've been figuring it out for themselves. But now that we know what we're looking for, we can search for it. I hope in a few years founder mode will be as well understood as manager mode. We can already guess at some of the ways it will differ. The way managers are taught to run companies seems to be like modular design in the sense that you treat subtrees of the org chart as black boxes. You tell your direct reports what to do, and it's up to them to figure out how. But you don't get involved in the details of what they do. That would be micromanaging them, which is bad." Got an email "GCP's Apache Kafka service is now live" at noon. After dinner, spent half an hour confirming it works well with Timeplus. I don't think you can make the bootstrap server publicly accessible. Has to setup a bastion host or run your app within the same project/VPC. Setting up the SASL username/pwd was not easy. Follow the guide carefully https://lnkd.in/gcKEVh3g and you may need to disable the iam.disableServiceAccountKeyCreation Anyway, if your workload are in GCP already, having such Kafka service in GCP is nice way to burn your cloud credits. Yet another Kafka vendor, great.

According to Bloomberg, "For every sign of an EV slowdown, another suggests an adolescent industry on the verge of its next growth spurt. In fact, for most automakers, even the first quarter was a blockbuster. Six of the 10 biggest EV makers in the US saw sales grow at a scorching pace compared to a year ago — up anywhere from 56% at Hyundai-Kia to 86% at Ford. A sampling of April sales similarly came in hot." The article concludes, "If the global market for EVs continued at this “slowdown” pace indefinitely, virtually all new cars sold would be electric in a decade."

I personally think it's time to begin disassociating the word "headless" from Shopify Hydrogen storefronts. I can explain why in pretty simple non-Spock language. "Headless" has always been a term to describe running your frontend on a separate server/platform than the server/platform delivering the content data and transacting platform functionality. That's it. People want to make it more complicated, but it just isn't. It's a term that has been used in tech long before eCommerce. Granted, the actual *execution* of this in Shopify-land 5 years ago was a gnarly and dubious proposition. Fast forward to today: Shopify has built their own *in-platform* infrastructure, as well as an entire library of tools to build a frontend on *top* of that infrastructure. Hydrogen is not headless. It is fully integrated with Shopify, end-to-end. Up is not down. Hydrogen is not "headless".

I'm Paying $99 A Month For Tesla's FSD - It Feels Like Having An Invisible Chauffeur. Can It Really Drive Everywhere and Is It Worth It? After having Tesla's FSD software for a month as a free trial and not having to pay, I decided to pay the $99/month and get the subscription to the software. Right now, it's at version 12.3.6. Tesla describes their FSD software as being able to drive the car almost anywhere, and they call it "FSD Supervised". This supervised software will drive on the freeway and on city streets with stop sign and stop light controls. There are also a few other features with it. Those features are: Smart Summon: Calling your car from a parking space to come to you Park Assist: Using a 3D view in order to park your car automatically Banish: Send your car away while it drops you off at the front of a building These additional features are valuable, especially for the elderly and those disabled. It means the car can do most of the work for you while you simply get out right at the entrance of the place you are at without having to use handicap parking - or have any kind of sticker on your car for disabilities. Have you ever thought about how compliance laws are a lot like design systems? I recently spoke with Joe Toscano, founder of DataGrade, and he made a fascinating comparison. Joe explained how Brad Frost's atomic design methodology took an engineering approach to design: → Creating standardized elements → Templatizing them → Scaling them across a system This led to the rise of human interface guidelines (HIGs) from tech giants like Google, Apple, and IBM. But here's where it gets really interesting: Joe argued that privacy laws and regulations are like the ultimate HIG for product design. Just like how HIGs provide rules and constraints for design systems... Compliance laws set guardrails for what we can and can't do with user data. If we design something that isn't compliant, it doesn't matter how sleek the UI is. Legal requirements become the top-level framework we have to design within. That's what got Joe into studying laws - to understand this new "design system" for building products. So next time you're cursing a lengthy legal doc or trying to make sense of GDPR...
