Kraft Heinz is in hot water over creative that the black community saw as racist and stereotypical. The two campaigns in question the first featured a black bride digging into a pasta dish surrounded by the bridal party and the brides father was missing from the group playing into stereotypes of black fathers as absent and not involved in their kids. The second campaign featured a ketchup smeared around the mouth that looked like the joker and the black community felt it portrayed black face. Kraft Heinz has since apologized and removed the campaigns. How do these kinds of missteps happen. Clearly there isn’t enough diversity in the agencies or the marketing team to question how these campaigns will be perceived. It generated major backlash in social media as black content creators criticized the campaigns. Reports have found that Black influencers are often not only paid less than white influencers but also not as likely to receive gifts from brands. In December 2021, influencer education platform The Influencer League and PR agency MSL US released a study that found that Black creators, on average, made 35% less than white creators. LaToya Shambo, founder and CEO of influencer agency Black Girl Digital said, “The beauty of the influencer marketing space is the power of intersectionality and being able to work with multiple creators of multiple backgrounds and ethnicities and races and genders,” she said. “And that’s what a brand should be thinking of is like, ‘Wow, I can really have my brand be infused with so much culture, so much community…versus ‘I need to drive a sale.’” Bright said she’s working to educate Black creators on setting rates, negotiating, and reading contracts via The Influencer League. In one instance, she said, a creator in the program was able to secure a brand deal worth $6,000 more than she had in the past. What do you feel about this? What more can be done about this. Will Bumble Inc.’s rebrand be enough for Gen Zs to flock back to the dating app? 🐝 💭 Lately, there’s been a mass migration of young dating app users intentionally logging off of the digital dating scene in the hopes of finding romantic interests more organically IRL. In turn, dating apps have been scrambling to reclaim their most dedicated audience. Recently, Bumble overhauled its entire visual identity with a global marketing campaign accompaniment. Their Instagram started from square one, they’ve chosen bolder fonts and brighter colors, as well as revamped their logo. Bumble’s rebrand, with the tagline “We’ve changed so that you don’t have to”, is excellent. But, in our opinion, it won't be enough for Gen Zs to come running back to the online dating scene. I wrote a thesis on influencer marketing years ago while matriculating at the University of Southern California. Almost a decade later and after serving as a film and television publicist for major brands and studios, I've seen what I wrote manifest in real time. Influencer marketing has emerged as the new form of publicity, reshaping how brands connect with consumers in the digital age. In the past, traditional media outlets—TV, print, and radio—dominated the publicity landscape, controlling brand narratives and shaping public perception. Today, influencers, with their authentic and direct access to niche audiences, have become the new gatekeepers of public opinion. Unlike traditional publicity, which often relied on one-way communication, influencer marketing fosters genuine, two-way engagement. Influencers build trust by sharing personal experiences and opinions, making their endorsements more relatable and impactful than scripted advertisements or celebrity endorsements. Their reach spans across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, where their followers view them as credible sources for recommendations. Moreover, influencer marketing offers unparalleled targeting and measurement capabilities, enabling brands to reach specific demographics and track engagement in real-time. Influencers have become cultural icons, shaping trends and conversations in a way that traditional media rarely can. As consumers become more skeptical of traditional ads, influencer marketing provides a way for brands to humanize themselves and build meaningful connections. In this new publicity landscape, influencers act as powerful conduits between brands and consumers, driving awareness and engagement through authentic, peer-like endorsements.
