The Pros and Cons of Consumption-Based Pricing As Salesforce rolls out #AgentForce with a $2-per-conversation model, I wanted to take a moment to discuss the pros and cons of consumption-based #pricing. A few years back we at Nativevideo - Salesforce AppExchange Partner tried consumption-based pricing for our video services. We found it led to frustrations for customers who couldn’t easily predict how much content they’d create and how much Nativevideo processing they would consume. In our case it was often something new they were bringing into their organization, so it was hard to forecast usage and allocate the necessary budgets. But consumption-based pricing has its pros as well as its cons. Pros ✅ 1. Lower initial risk Consumption-based pricing enables customers to start with minimal financial risk, making it ideal for businesses wanting to test a new solution without heavy upfront investment. 2. Data-driven insights The model naturally provides usage and sales data, helping the customer and the vendor better understand product adoption and ROI. 3. Scalability As a business grows, the pricing scales with them. This aligns costs with actual usage, making it adaptable for fluctuating demand. 4. Flexibility It allows businesses to operate on overage models where additional usage can be paid for, providing a “pay-as-you-go” structure. Cons ❎ 1. Unpredictable costs: One of the biggest challenges is budget forecasting. If usage spikes unexpectedly, it can lead to an unexpected bill, always an unpleasant surprise! 2. Unpredictable revenue: For companies offering services, consumption-based pricing can result in unpredictable revenue streams, making financial forecasting and planning more challenging compared to subscription models. 3. Difficulty for procurement teams: Procurement teams prefer predictable models. With consumption pricing, how do you know the PO amount if the costs vary each month? 4. Administrative overhead Tracking usage and managing fluctuating bills adds complexity and increased admin costs, which can be frustrating for both customers and internal sales teams. 5. Risk of over- or under-estimating costs For sales teams, quoting the right price can be difficult. Overestimating can deter customers, while underestimating can lead to excess fees, making it hard to maintain customer satisfaction. While consumption-based pricing can offer significant flexibility and scalability, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. If you're considering adopting it, ensure your customers have clear tools and resources to monitor usage and set alerts, minimizing the risk of "bill shock" and ensuring a smoother experience for all stakeholders.
