The New York ecosystem for dual-use technology is small but strong and growing rapidly. Thanks to companies like Decisive Point and @a16z who continue to support the community with networking events for founders, investors, and community members. More and more founders are recognizing the value in partnering with the DOD as a strong way to support the country's national security interests while hopefully decreasing the tax burden on citizens regarding government spend as commercially available technology becomes more available and affordable for government organizations. Not only this, but the DOD serves as a great test bed and sandbox for emerging technologies and talent. #dualuse #emergingtech #defensetech #Kilsar

During August and September, Gabby Miller and I spoke to more than two dozen experts on US tech policy about what to expect after the election on various issues- from artificial intelligence to platform accountability to broadband. With Benjamin Lennett and Prithvi Iyer we combined their perspectives with secondary research and produced a 10,000 word primer on the various scenarios. Of course, the presidential election is not the only race that will define the makeup of government after November; control of the House and Senate are up in the air, and several states will choose a Governor and elect new legislators. Technology is not a motivating issue in most of these elections. Yet after the ballots are counted, the outcomes will certainly alter the future of tech policy in the US and beyond. The folks we talked to shared a range of perspectives on the trajectory of these issues, from the persistence of the "techlash," to bipartisan support for child online safety legislation, to the appetite for AI and privacy legislation. The August release of the Jamba-1.5 models, scaled versions of the Jamba models from March 2024, went largely unnoticed. The Token Wars of the chip startups. Why the fight for the fastest inference will influence the future of AI. „Today, Cerebras, SambaNova, and Groq are all delivering over 1,000 tokens per second, and the “token wars” have revved up considerably. At the end of August, Cerebras claimed it had launched the “world’s fastest AI inference” at 1,800 tokens per second, and last week Cerebras said it had beaten that record and become the “first hardware of any kind” to exceed 2,000 tokens per second on one of Meta’s Llama models. “ „AI models are quickly being used to power far more complex applications than just chat.“ Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman simplifies why: „Nobody’s going to build a business on an application that makes you sit around and wait“. All too often, the climate conversation falls prey to oversimplification, labeling some industries, technologies, or interventions as "good" for the planet and others "bad." While there are certainly examples of actors causing extreme harm, more often this assertion conceals a more complex duality: Essential sectors of our society and economy — from education to transportation — contribute to climate change while also facing the impacts of rising temperatures and extreme weather. As a society, we must align on the acceptable tradeoffs of the technologies we have today AND continue to innovate to improve upon what is possible today. For example: 🏥 Healthcare's reliance on single-use materials and high consumption of gasses and power contribute to the sector’s significant environmental footprint. But it’s not as simple as reusing and recycling; disposable syringes are wasteful, but have saved millions of lives — and few patients and providers are willing to return to times when life expectancies were shorter and patient outcomes were more precarious. 🚘 Transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions –– and at the same time, our aging transportation infrastructure is ill-equipped to handle current and worsening climatic extremes.  High temperatures and flooding frequently disrupt multiple modes of transportation, and urban sprawl makes implementing more sustainable interventions difficult. Looking to the future, the experts on the panel also recognized that these sectors will play a key role in driving climate solutions – from mobility wallets to rethinking hospital supply chains. Medical practice staff handle a large volume of calls and texts to patients for things like appointment scheduling, referral follow-ups and prescription refills. It's a time-consuming process and results in a lot of administrative overhead. So enjoying Madrona’s #IASummit on using AI across the stack to build intelligent applications. Will share some thoughts at the end of the day, but the day started with an important announcement that has tremendous potential for society. Grateful for Madrona and in particular Matt McIlwain for helping spearhead the announcement of a national effort called the Cancer AI Alliance to transform the way cancer research is done. The four of the largest NCI-backed cancer research centers will share data and apply AI to generate new research and treatment breakthroughs, powered with over $40M in infrastructure investment from many companies from the likes of NVIDIA, Microsoft, Amazon, and Deloitte. Great podcast with Bret Taylor (CEO Sierra). Stellar communicator. Covers a lot of ground. One area he touches on are engineering changes instigated due to agentic frameworks. Resonates with a lot of the work we are doing at Doyen AI. A few nuggets - engineering moving from rule-based to goals & guidelines, increased focus on statistical approaches for managing non-deterministic systems, core agentic components are (a) knowledge of the business, (b) knowledge of business processes, and (c) knowledge of underlying systems for actioning. Battery Ventures released their State of Open Cloud report last week. Really cool (and humbling!) to see Ravenna featured in the report alongside industry innovators ... including my other favorite Seattle startup Clarify - I see you Patrick Thompson Austin Hay Ondrej Hrebicek ;). The report analyzes the current AI market "supercycle," and projects a whopping $4 trillion in market value up for grabs 🤯. The point that caught my attention in the report - the emphasis on product design as a "critical force driving fast adoption and accelerating time to value" in AI-powered solutions. I couldn't agree more with this point. At Ravenna, we place a ridiculous emphasis on great product and user experience design as we believe they are essential to driving AI product adoption.
