Also in Cannes this week, Disney announced a new partnership with retail data provider Affinity Solutions, which collects sales and purchase data from banks and credit companies. Using Disney’s clean room tech, brands and buyers can use Affinity’s purchase data to plan and measure campaigns across Disney inventory. And it isn’t just entertainment giants like Disney with plans to put more attribution data to work in streaming. Last week, for example, the DSP Madhive acquired the omnichannel marketing platform Frequence. For Madhive, the goal is to create more opportunities to retarget streaming viewers on other channels. Since TV ads don’t drive direct clicks, retargeting is a popular tactic for applying performance marketing to CTV. And Madhive isn’t the only programmatic platform buying up tools for video and CTV performance marketing. Seedtag and Equativ each acquired a video-focused SSP – Beachfront and Sharethrough, respectively – to bolster their repertoire of CTV and video supply. On Oct. 8, Disney and Kroger announced a deal that will give Boost With Kroger Plus members ($99 a year) a subscription of their choice to ad-supported Disney+, Hulu or ESPN+ at no extra charge; this summer, WBD pacted with grocery and food delivery service DoorDash, giving DashPass members ($96 a year) free access to the ad-supported tier of Max; in November, NBCU teamed with the similar service Instacart to give Instacart+ members ($99 a year) free subscriptions to Peacock; and Walmart continues to offer comp Paramount+ to its Walmart+ ($98 a year) subscribers. The streaming partnerships follow, of course, the original bundle of video and vittles: Amazon Prime. A Prime membership for $139 a year gets users Fallout, Thursday Night Football on Prime Video and a discount on focaccia (and other products) in Whole Foods stores. (Netflix, meanwhile, has dismissed the idea of bundling.) ✅🖥️ Marketplace.org (7/8): “Paramount’s not alone, in the sense that they’re trying to become profitable in the wake of having all of these assets that are not as valuable as they once were,” said media consultant Brad Adgate. It’s not just the decline of broadcast television. It’s the challenge of creating a streaming platform that’s profitable. “It really comes down to content. I mean, I think the biggest challenge that subscriber companies have, like a Paramount+, or Disney+, is not getting subscribers, as much as it is keeping subscribers.” Whether Skydance CEO David Ellison, whose father founded Oracle, can turn things around for Paramount is a wait and see situation. University of Minnesota’s Joel Waldfogel is particularly skeptical about the streaming business. “It’s hard to understand how the bringing tech fairy dust in here fundamentally makes it sufficiently attractive relative to the other streaming services that it’s going to attract a lot of interest,” he said. Subscribers only really want to subscribe to maybe three different streaming services. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video take the top two spots. The live "Paris Prime" viewership measure is inclusive of NBC Television Network, Peacock, USA Network, CNBC, E!, Paris Extra 1, Paris Extra 2, and additional NBCU digital platforms. U.S. primetime viewership includes NBC, Peacock, and USA Network. In terms of specific business outcome results, NBCU says that over the three-day period, its advertisers on average had 18% higher attention; 33% greater message recall; and 67% increased likelihood to search due to linear exposure rather than competitive broadcast/cable television. Overall high-performing advertising categories for attention, recall, and search outcomes included automotive, restaurants and movie studios messaging. This data come from iSpot; Marketcast; EDO Ad EnGage; and NBCU in-house audience insights. For NBCU's closely watched Peacock streaming platform, viewership averaged 10.9MM viewers over the 3-day period. ✅⬇️ AdExchanger (5/24): “To some degree, the digitization of TV marketing is inevitable. Wall Street investors prefer advertising and media companies with the most promising long-term profitability. One way to get there is for streaming companies to access shopper data and strike partnerships with retailers to court advertisers with the promise of performance and attribution. Publishers want to relabel connected TV as a performance channel, (an analyst) said. But if that happens, she continued, “CTV will lose its cred” among buyers and brands as a viable replacement for legacy linear commercials. Say what you will about linear, but it’s a mass reach vehicle. And if CTV doesn’t provide the same reach opportunity, Wall Street may cool on public companies with a CTV advertising business, (the analyst) said. The reality is, upper-funnel channels, like streaming, have a strong downstream impact on outcomes even if they don’t directly drive a purchase. For example, CTV’s ability to drive mass reach and brand awareness is why more retail media spend is moving to streaming, said Max Willens, a senior analyst at eMarketer, also speaking at Programmatic I/O this week. I really loved this OpEd by Jim Spanfeller. Global media at scale behind holdcos, black boxes, walled gardens, or "AI" and MAX+ product names du jor is broken. A vestige of the past. It will always have some place to be sure, but it will no longer be the leader with advertisers who care about where the money goes and how it reaches consumers. The future of ad tech is local. Reigniting publisher and buyer relationships which have stood since before the internet, private equity, management consultants. Real people connecting real brands to humans with the power of technology, supporting real publishers and local communities. And having fun while we do it. 😎 This was my favorite part: "What are the chances that change will come and Google will actually be broken up? The likelihood is very high. Google has not been playing fairly for some time. It’s a classic case study for why we have strong guidelines around monopolies. And it’s not the only platform in need of reform. While a Google breakup could present short-term challenges for premium digital publishers, it would, at the end of the day, offer substantial opportunities for increased revenue, improved search traffic management and greater control over content distribution. Publishers will need to adapt, as always, to the changing landscape and explore new strategies. But most will undoubtedly come out in a much better place. As will marketers! Injecting government control into open markets is always dangerous … unless, of course, you are dealing with a monopoly. And the idea that Google is not a monopoly in search and advertising is farcical." Discovery (WBD) are making inventory on the Peacock streaming platform and the Eurosport website and supporting apps available to buy in private marketplaces (PMP for programmatic advertisers). That development could mean brands with smaller budgets can access huge Olympic audiences previously fenced off to big spenders. Peacock is set to carry the entire Olympic schedule — over 5,000 hours of live sports — and ads running against that coverage will all be available to buy programmatically, via a partnership with ad tech provider The Trade Desk. At the same time, Warner Bros. Discovery, which holds coverage rights across Europe via its Eurosport brand, has also begun to make inventory on its Olympic coverage available programmatically. It launched a new marketplace in May, WBD Connect, which gives advertisers access to ad inventory across CNN International Commercial (CNNIC) and WBD Sports Europe, including Eurosport, in partnership with ad tech vendor Magnite. While Eurosport streaming ads WBD’s streaming platforms Max and discovery+ will not be available to buy programmatically, the publisher has put ads on the Eurosport website and apps on the table.
