The attached article from Becker's demonstrates how hospital consolidation is a balancing act. Many markets today are dominated by a few large health systems, which limits competition in the area. On the flip side, with a larger network of facilities and specialists, consolidated systems can offer better care coordination across the continuum, reducing gaps in patient care.

Want adoption? Make it convenient. If I showed up to buy a car and was responsible for adding up every part to create the MSRP, I would not buy that car. Expecting patients to leverage healthcare pricing transparency on their own is an unfair burden that will restrict it to a few patients. After all, my parents don't use Excel, and the machine-readable files aren't meant for them! This is exactly why Congress passed the No Surprises Act. It puts the burden on creating a receipt ahead of your healthcare service on hospitals (for cash pay or uninsured patients) and on payers (for insured patients). MedCity News interviewed me to explain this further. Hospitals justify facility fees as crucial to cover overhead costs and keep operations running. Recent studies reveal that private health plans pay NYC hospitals significantly more than Medicare rates (3-4x), leading to increased healthcare costs for all parties involved. The rising expenses in the healthcare sector are becoming a burden for employers, consumers, and government alike. Considering that hospitals can cover their costs at a fraction of what private plans pay (120-150% of Medicare), the necessity of additional expenses through facility fees raises questions about the sustainability of the current healthcare system.

For 11 consecutive years, reports like this one have found that the prices providers (hospitals, physicians, etc.) charge are the main factor driving Massachusetts’ high health care costs. While we value our hospitals and our health care institutions, it’s worth asking – what are we as taxpayers paying for, and at what cost? Individuals on Medicaid (taxpayer-funded) pay minimal to zero costs (~1/3 of the state’s population) and Medicare (taxpayer-funded) cost share is graduated based on income. But, for people with private health insurance (employer-sponsored health insurance, like Wellpoint members) health care premiums and out-of-pocket costs are taking up a significant –and growing– part of their income- between 20% to 40%. Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate how taxpayer funds are being used to support health care and work with policymakers to reform reimbursements as means to help people stay healthy and out of hospitals.  In the meantime, below are some steps people can take to start understanding health care costs and stay healthy:   1. Think health, not sick care: eat healthy, exercise regularly, and stay active every day; 2. Take control of your health. Partner with your primary care team and be sure to get recommended preventive care and screenings; 3. Use primary care, urgent care, and community health centers for non-emergent care. These locations are the lower cost alternatives; 4.
