Fifth Third recently hosted business and community leaders to reveal local economic insights with data for Grand Rapids and the national economy, as part of the Empowering American Cities initiative. The data shows Grand Rapids not only outperforms other regions in the Midwest, but it’s also one of the top 50 extended metropolitan areas in the U.S. That’s helping the area attract and retain a skilled workforce. Thanks to our economists, Jeffrey Korzenik, Chief Economist, Fifth Third Commercial Bank, and Sarah Dickerson from the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, as well as Randy Thelen, The Right Place, Inc., for diving into the research with us and celebrating the area’s success. Last month, we unveiled our new Community Lending Data Portal, now including mortgage and small business lending data encompassing ALL of Illinois for years 2018 – 2022. Previously only including data for Chicagoland, this tool allows fair housing advocates to easily evaluate the state of financial opportunity in specific counties, municipalities, state Senate and House districts, and more. Today, we consistently find that even seemingly well-qualified Black mortgage applicants face a much steeper path towards homeownership than white applicants with similar debt and income levels. The result is a racial homeownership gap larger today than it was in 1960.
