For this reason, our team has created a brief snapshot of what was in this month's newsletter. 💡 As negotiations between CPKC and the TCRC remain at an impasse and await a decision from the CIRB, both parties are urged to seek a resolution to prevent disruptions that could significantly impact individuals and businesses. 💡 Amid a growing container shortage and significant port congestion in northern China, freight forwarders advise shippers to book space in advance to navigate the unpredictable market conditions exacerbated by the Red Sea crisis and reduced vessel capacity.  💡 With the MV Dali successfully refloated and a new channel operational, carriers have resumed accepting bookings to Baltimore, alleviating the nearly two-month blockade caused by the ship's collision.  💡 As of May, liner services affected by Panama Canal transit limits have resumed their regular routes, reducing round trip times by 1-2 weeks, though experts caution that tonnage shortages persist and stress the importance of restoring the canal's draught limit to 50 feet to fully optimize ship capacity. 💡 In April 2024, U.S. inflation cooled slightly with a 0.3% month-over-month rise in the CPI and 3.4% year-over-year, while core inflation also decelerated, suggesting that despite ongoing increases in shelter and motor vehicle insurance costs, a gradual cooling trend may lead to policy rate cuts later in the year. 💡 With Canada's annual inflation rate easing to 2.7% in April, driven by lower grocery and restaurant prices despite a surge in gasoline costs, the Bank of Canada has decided to reduce their overnight lending rate in June by 25 basis points. 💡 Canadian West Coast Ports are experiencing the following delays, the Vancouver Port has an average delay of 9 days while Prince Rupert is experiencing an average delay of 11 days.  💡 The Canada Border Services Agency's CARM initiative, set to start on October 21, 2024, aims to streamline the collection of duties and taxes for imported goods and improve compliance, with importers encouraged to register on the CARM Client Portal ahead of the launch. 💡 With Transpacific Ocean freight reaching peak conditions in May and imports expected to surge further through the traditional peak season in June, carriers will be implementing another general rate increase (GRI) on June 1. Carriers getting choosy on what they carry – opting for lighter loads. Container lines are becoming increasingly selective about the commodities they want to carry, targeting “more for less, in size” during the peak season rush. Heavy and overweight shipments have taken a hard knockback from carriers working to push vessel loads on available space from India to Europe, amid strong booking demand, according to market sources. They noted that major liners were pushing for lightweight freight bookings and tightened their cargo weight policies to realise their stowage plans. Net revocations (voluntarily suspensions of operations reported to FMCSA) have slowed while new carriers entering the market have increased for the second consecutive quarter. This along with a decline in carriers exiting suggests a more stable market with slower carrier attrition is emerging. Current conditions indicate balanced capacity that may remain for the near term, possibly indicating that “the weakest capacity has already left the market,” according to the report. The chronic lack of ships for hire has pushed container charter markets upwards once more, as the decline in freight rates appears to have been stemmed for the time being. Last Wednesday’s HRCI saw a firm 3.1% boost on the week, pushing the index back up to 2,096 points. Nine sizes posted healthy gains, with only two sectors slipping slightly in what has been a busy week all-round. At the heart of the index boost was an emphatic rise from the Panamaxes, with some of the few remaining ships for this year being picked up at very strong levels, both for 12 months and three years. With so few ships on offer, more relets are starting to appear, yet interest remains intense and such vessels are likely to be quickly snapped up.
