Today, Gallup is excited to announce the release of our second report on career-connected learning (CCL) in middle and high schools, in partnership with the New Hampshire Learning Initiative (NHLI). The latest findings underscore the transformative impact of CCL on school engagement and students' futures. The research highlights how CCL equips students with essential skills for the workforce and higher education by integrating skill-based learning, training pathways, and practical work experience into their educational journey. Notably, having a mentor significantly enhances student engagement, as students with supportive mentors are more likely to be engaged in school compared to their peers (36% vs 16%). On November 4th, Sean L. Davenport, Ed.D. and I had the honor of hosting Manhattan's first-ever AI Summit, where we cracked the code on how to engage students, school leaders, educators, and families in meaningful discussions about Generative Artificial Intelligence. Our goal was to create a space for honest conversations around the responsible use of AI in schools. And that’s exactly what we did. Through a series of discussions, we explored how students, educators, and school leaders are already using AI to enhance learning, organize their schedules, assist with coding, and even build websites. The best part? Hearing directly from the students themselves about how AI is improving their school experience. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of 125+ students and 15 EdTech companies, who partnered with us to make this day a success. Together, we were able to share insights, build connections, and spark new ideas for how AI can be responsibly integrated into education. Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue these important conversations and engage with even more stakeholders across Manhattan and New York City. The future of AI in education is bright, and we’re just getting started! A huge thank you to our AI Collective for making this event possible and for continuing to push the boundaries of what AI can do in education. Dr. Higher Education, I am uncertain where we’ll be in the next few years, but here are some key points I wanted to share: (1) Recruitment and Hiring Practices - Post Salary Ranges: It’s a waste of everyone’s time to post positions without including a salary range. - Hiring Risks: The hiring process is inherently uncertain, with a 50/50 chance of selecting the right candidate. It’s okay to take a calculated risk and prioritize talent. - Transferable Skills: Many roles in higher education are transferable. Someone with experience in student affairs, for example, should be considered for development roles if they have relevant skills and experience. - Address Nepotism: Institutions should prioritize the best candidates over personal connections to ensure long-term success. - Evaluate Institutional Fit: Avoid cycling the same individuals through institutions unless they have a proven track record of success. (2) Leadership and Supervision - Supervision Standards: It’s frustrating to work in an environment that emphasizes continuous learning and requires certain degrees when supervisors themselves don’t meet those criteria. - Support Career Advancement: Not all professionals seek career advancement, but for those who do, create opportunities for growth whenever possible. (3) Faculty Responsibilities - Faculty Awareness: Faculty should broaden their awareness beyond their classrooms to understand broader institutional and student needs. - Adapting Teaching Methods: If students aren’t learning effectively, faculty should adapt their teaching approaches. Student demographics and learning styles evolve, and so should instructional methods. (4) Professional Development - Prioritize Professional Development: Professional development is essential for everyone, regardless of how long they’ve been in the field. Attend development conferences to stay updated and grow within the profession. (5) Job Application Practices - Letters of Recommendation: Stop requiring letters of recommendation prematurely. Many professionals prefer to keep their career moves private until they are finalists for a position. (6) Cultural and Systemic Change - Evolving Success Standards: Just because a certain path was challenging for one person doesn’t mean it should remain that way. The goal should be to make success more accessible and achievable for those who come after us.
