"When I searched for 'north carolina marketing consultant' you showed up first. That's why I called you" Fun moment last week, and a little win that felt like a big one. Here's the story. A guy (in Texas) calls me about his business (in NC). He wants to work with someone local to the business, not to himself. We met last week, follow up is Thursday, and it looks like we may be a good fit for each other. I asked him, "Our circles in Raleigh and Plano don't overlap much. How'd you hear about me?" He gave the answer at top. I thought he was exaggerating about finding me first on a state-wide search. My goal is to be one of the big names in the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill), and that fight is hard enough with several hundred marketing agencies and freelancers in just this PART of NC to rank highly. Statewide, there's what, 1000+ competitors that fall under the category "marketing consultant"? So of course, I did what anyone who wonders if they are being gaslighted would do. I opened up a private browser and did the search. ➡️ north carolina marketing consultant ⬅️ Lo and behold, he's right. I have invested days, weeks, months and years of building out my Google Business Profile and hustling to make it stand out... and it's a joy when those labors bear fruit and pay off. Back in February I planned, produced, and promoted my second annual Galentine's Social vendor event here in Chattanooga. This year, Galentine's nearly doubled in size, reach, and attendees. My coffee vendor sold out in 2 hours, both my food vendors sold out, my experience vendors (tattoos, tooth gems, tarot, etc) filled up in minutes, and many of our vendors hit over $1K in sales in the first couple of hours. We got local news coverage for the second year in a row & raised nearly $1K for a local black/woman owned adult education non-profit. Yet, I was in the negative after it all, not even including the countless hours I put in myself. Overall the event was a huge success…yet it ended up costing me money instead of making me money. And truly—that could’ve been even worse if I didn't do all my own marketing creation and hadn't traded for some services. Why am I telling you all this? Because small business world—especially on social media—can feel like a comparison game, and success isn’t always measured in numbers. I choose to spend my time and money investing in the small business and events culture here in Chattanooga because it’s bigger than me and my bottom line as a entrepreneur. Putting money back into the pockets of local businesses, artisans and makers is so important to me, and I believe quality, curated, experiential events are so important to our success. Galentine's was a celebration of all the amazing talent and craftsmanship Chattanooga has to offer, and it was a pleasure to lose money to make it happen 🫶
