Last week, I had the opportunity to connect with an HR leader focused on the life sciences industry, who has spent most of her career supporting startups in the Bay Area. As the landscape in the Bay Area shifts, we’re seeing an increasing number of inquiries about relocating to Southern California, particularly the San Diego region, which is seeing a growing number of life sciences startups. One challenge is that the Bay Area continues to offer significantly higher salaries than San Diego for similar roles. Additionally, while the Bay Area is well-versed in navigating the transition from stealth to commercial, and from venture capital to IPO, San Diego has yet to fully embrace the shorter career stints often seen in these environments. In the Bay Area, it’s common for professionals to spend one to two years helping a company get off the ground, achieve an acquisition, or, in some cases, pivot when funding runs out, before moving on to the next venture. San Diego’s lab real estate market is expanding rapidly, and in my view, if we want to foster similar growth to what the Bay Area has experienced over the past 30 years, we need to shift our mindset. Rather than focusing on the length of time someone has been with a company, we should be looking at the impact of the work they accomplished. We celebrate founders who move from one successful exit to the next startup, but we should also recognize the employees and leaders who made that success possible. In the Bay Area, short stints are often seen as badges of honor—testaments to the contributions made during critical growth phases. It’s time we focus on the achievements, not just the “dash” of time on a CV. #qualstaff #hiring #startup #lifescience

Recently, I’ve been asked a lot about Non-Competes within the recruitment industry. Especially when your current company suddenly throws a new one at you. Every week at Avetix Group, we speak to 5+ top billers from our competition. Right now, there’s a dangerous trend of competitors asking employees to sign outrageous non-competes for small salary increases. Given that the majority of the Leeds recruitment market is dominated by graduate hiring companies, many people signing these new agreements are in their first roles and are quite impressionable. Here’s my take: 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫. 🚫✍️ And really, ask yourself—why is this new non-compete popping up now?
