I love reading interviews to top global CEOs, you always learn something new. India's Tata Group chair Natarajan Chandrasekaran's recent interview in the Financial Times is a good example of it. Even though he has lead the business to a 10-fold growth in profit after tax since he was appointed in 2017, he acknowledges that there is no time to waste in preparing the company for the future of EV, renewables, digitization and AI. And he does it, by the read of it, with great of focus on the 'how'. My favorite quotes on the 'how': 👉 " I don't believe in switching off. Your mind is always working. You just shouldn't get worked up...I always have a smile, no one can make out if I'm going through a tough day" 👉 " Who am I to think I know more about any business than the management teams of [Tata's] respective businesses? 👉 "You don't have to be the one that's right, you just have to get it right" And on the 'what' 👉 "Every company has to be focused on financial fitness...don't worry about growth, fix the fitness. Performance will come" 👉 "However painful...these are transitions that need to be done [...] We can either wait 10, 15, 20 years or you make the transition now...we have to do this. Last week, I gave shape to a passion that’s very close to my heart - teaching. I launched SkillsOn, a platform to impart the skills of tomorrow with authentic, industry-led, experiential modules. Having been at the helm of consumer investments as Vice-President at India’s largest domestic consumer venture fund, I launched India’s first Venture Capital School on SkillsOn with the idea of passing on my experience to 10, maybe 20 folks. The response has been overwhelming, heartening and gratifying. Within a span of just 2-3 days, SkillsOn received not 10, not 20, but 100 registrations and we’re still counting! We have a networking group where member introductions have already started. We have a power group for the registered folks where 2 marquee job opportunities and an invite for India’s biggest investor event have already been shared. What I'd Love to Know - India Tech/Startups Things I don't have much of an idea about but would like to, so here are some questions for anyone who has even part answers: 1. Is QuickCommerce driving additional growth for brands, or are customers just moving their platform of choice for ordering? What is the mix of these two drivers of D2C uplift on QC; and are D2C brands with preferential placements on QC cannibalising those on "slow commerce"? 2. Is there economic growth? HUL grew revenues at 2% in FY2024; ITC grew 2% in Q3 of FY24 (which is some time back, so it may be up now?). If we are/could be in a period of weak GDP growth, does it matter for startups and venture? Many of today's unicorns have built largely from formalising the unorganised; although Zomato/Ola/Uber etc. have created new behaviours (additional customer spend). So, do we need a fast growing economy for large startup outcomes? 4. What are the opportunities this year in consumer-tech (broadly speaking) outside Quick Commerce? EdTech seems like a big one which will have a resurgence - already seeing a bunch of breakout companies with excellent growth. Healthcare - a global resurgence of interest. But there isn't much happening in social/content/community/non-Qcommerce platforms (if you are building in this, please get in touch)

On one hand I totally understand, I would pause on hiring bog standard TA folks too, in the current market. However, I think NOW is a huge opportunity for transformation in Talent, broadly. Combining TA/TM strategies, leveraging succession planning and high performer development data to drive external talent pipelining etc. And I don’t mean getting your remaining internal TA folks to build pipelines, I mean transforming from the reactive, fulfilment led role 9 out of 10 internal TA, even exec search functions play…into a strategic, respected advisory arm of the business. For the right, brave, agile and progressive thinking CPO/CEO/MD, I can definitely help them get ahead of the curve. If only I could get a conversation with those folks… Do you know any?

Celebrations are a cornerstone of human civilization – bringing us together in times of joy and solemnity. Any form of celebration, especially in India, is a reflection of what we value. In today’s world, celebrations have taken on many shapes and forms. Our lives are so busy that we are all possibly just waiting for an occasion (or an excuse) to get together. We have a lot more “days” to celebrate people, relationships, ideas and much more; from Dog Day to Friendship Day and Grandparents Day – all of them honouring the human experience. Alongside deeply meaningful observances, we now also find ourselves acknowledging days that may make you raise an eyebrow. Examples would be Wear Pajamas to Work Day, Dance Like a Chicken Day, Strawberry Ice Cream Day, and even Toothache Day. The list goes on, and each day is more curious than the last. These quirky days (while often lighthearted) also reveal how these events have been both amplified and trivialised by the double-edged sword of social media and capitalism. On one hand, this is a beautiful thing—everyone, everywhere can be part of a collective fun, united in brand campaigns, discounts, hashtags, and memes. But on the other hand, we have to ask: Has celebration lost some of its depth in the process? All thanks to the ads, Rakshabandhan can now be called ‘Cadbury Day’. And we all are aware of how Valentine’s Day now thrives on capitalism. Sad but true. Another interesting observation is that kids today are celebrating festivals like Halloween in India, which growing up I had never heard of. In fact, I did not know about Valentine's Day at all, in the 80’s it just wasn’t a thing. The cultural exchange is great, but we need to go back how celebrations bring more meaning in relationships and family traditions than the consumption of commercialized life style. Celebrations come with burden of gifting. Needless to say, we give and receive presents we don't really need. Did you know that the gifting industry in India, boasts a significant market size of $30 billion? E-commerce, quick commerce, dozens of sales and offers rain throughout the year, and people have endless options to gift each other. And the market of personalised gifting in India is expected to grow to $42 billion by 2030. We would all agree that there’s something inherently human about finding reasons to celebrate. Last week, I had the privilege of attending a lecture by legendary professor Dr. Sankar Pal at the Bose Institute (BI), Kolkata, India, on its 108th foundation day (founded by Prof. J.C. Bose in 1917). Dr. Pal's bio is in the pdf. I live in Silicon Valley. Most AI conferences are around #Agentic AI, #LLM-based GenAI applications, and #AGI. Dr. Pal, who started his AI Journey in the 70s (after his 2nd PhD from Imperial College, London), shared insights from his 50 years of AI research, and it was so refreshing! He worked in: 🚀 70s: Pattern Recognition: The foundation was laid for machines to recognize patterns in data, a precursor to modern image and speech recognition. 🚀 80s: Expert Systems: AI systems began to mimic human expertise, solving complex problems in domains like medicine and engineering. 🚀 90s: Soft Computing, Granular Computing, and ANN: Fuzzy logic and neural networks emerged, enabling machines to handle uncertainty and learn from data. 🚀 2000s: Data Mining: The ability to extract valuable insights from large datasets revolutionized industries like finance and marketing. 🚀 2010s: Deep Learning: A breakthrough in AI, deep learning-powered advancements in natural language processing, computer vision, and more.  🚀 2020s: Attention is All You Need! Dr. Pal highlighted one of his favorite research areas: Granular Deep Learning. He gave demonstrations of granular computing applications (referred to the famous paper by Zadeh in 1993), such as video tracking in ambiguous situations. He showed how the rough lower-upper approximations in the temporal domain provide an estimate of the object model in unsupervised tracking, even under complete occlusion (identifying a human being at the London Subway behind a pillar). Some of the benefits of Granular DL are:  💡 Enhanced Interpretability: By leveraging information granules, models can provide clearer insights into their decision-making processes, which is increasingly important in areas like healthcare and finance. 💡 Noisy and uncertain data: Applications like medical image analysis, financial forecasting, and natural language processing often deal with data that is inherently noisy and uncertain.   💡 Complex patterns and nonlinear relationships: GDL can effectively capture intricate patterns and nonlinear relationships that may be difficult for traditional DL models to learn. 💡 High-dimensional data: By reducing the dimensionality of data through granulation, GDL can handle high-dimensional datasets more efficiently. GDL is used in medical image analysis, financial forecasting, and NLP.

Congratulations to BCG Henderson Institute (BHI) Fellow @Sagar Goel and BHI Ambassador @Orsolya Kovacs on winning the 2023 HBR Prize! The HBR Prize, judged by an independent panel of business and academic leaders with input from members of HBR’s Advisory Board, spotlights the most outstanding article published each year in Harvard Business Review. As a part of their BHI research, Sagar and Orsi co-authored a study on how companies are reskilling their employees in a rapidly evolving era of automation and AI. For their article “Reskilling in the Age of AI,” Sagar and Orsolya, together with Jorge Tamayo, Leila Doumi, and Raffaella Sadun, interviewed leaders at some 40 organizations around the world that are investing in large-scale reskilling programs.
