Anybody want to educate me on why commercial insurance companies sometimes leave claims open and bleed cash for years? I'm assisting a rather large organization with three claims right now that have been open for the past 5 years, and the insurer seems to not be in any hurry to close them out. As far as I'm aware, the claimants and their families have never been approached about settlement. So, the money is just flying out the window every month. I know I'm a simple guy, but this doesn't seem complicated. What benefit is there in not even attempting to settle this claim? This says nothing of the fact that open claims are considered in rates for current and future insurance policy premiums, so this is still costing the business money (and no small amount thereof.) This articles points out an interesting phenomenon that is going to impact every employer's work comp rates in the future. Last year, the number of claims went down but the cost of claims increased. Think about that for a minute. In our previous podcast, Mark Walls and I had an in depth conversation about why that is happening. It is not because the injuries are changing, it is because of advances in medical technology and expanded life span expectancy. This is a great thing for human quality of life, but there is a very real impact to the costs of insurance. It is things like this that make self-insuring a far better way to manage costs than buying insurance through the traditional marketing. Insurance Coverage for Faulty Workmanship: A Gap in Protection? I recently came across this insightful article about Commercial General Liability (CGL) policies and their limitations regarding faulty workmanship. As someone who has dealt with contractors and service providers, this raised some important questions. Key points from the article: 1. Most CGL policies exclude coverage for damage caused by the insured's own faulty workmanship. 2. These policies are not intended to serve as warranties or guarantees of work quality. 3. Insurers generally consider faulty workmanship an uninsurable business risk. 4. For additional protection, businesses may need separate warranty coverage, maintenance bonds, or performance bonds. This got me thinking: What really covers a mechanic or plumber who does a shoddy job? Is it wrong to expect insurance to act as a warranty with an option to make things right? As consumers, we often assume that a business's insurance will cover any mistakes or poor workmanship. But it seems the reality is more complex. I'd love to hear your thoughts: 1. Is this gap in coverage fair to consumers? 2. How can businesses better protect themselves and their customers? 3. Should insurance companies offer more comprehensive coverage for faulty workmanship?

If you’re an insured how you feeling reading this? 😬 The headline versus the reality of the entire market is definitely in contrast. Obviously carriers need to be profitable but the increases insureds have faced in the past several years does not make this article any easier to read. The estimating tool/software system that insurance companies and restoration contractors use to estimate reconstruction costs fails to identify a number of line items that are key components to an accurate estimate. In this picture, I can already identify three things that insurance adjuster would initially miss simply because of the estimating tool. Don’t do claims alone, because you don’t know what your leaving on the table.

This report offers a compelling look at telematics in motor insurance pricing. As I've often said, telematics improves the management of revenue, margin, and volume while reducing anti-selection and moral hazard. But it’s more of a product innovation than a pricing change. I'm still undecided on whether insurance rating processes penalise protected characteristics like ethnicity. The report shows telematics data slightly reduces reliance on sociodemographic factors but doesn't eliminate them. Notably, rates from telematics models still correlate with sociodemographic factors. It's encouraging to see academics analysing insurance pricing with real-world and synthetic data. The paper prompts an important question: Is telematics more transparent to non-pricing professionals?
