Honored to Deliver the 84th Convocation Address at Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai . On September 20, 2024, I had the privilege of addressing the graduates at the 84th Convocation of TISS, Mumbai. Key Reflections from My Address: 1. A Day to Celebrate: I encouraged the graduates to not only celebrate their accomplishments but also express gratitude to those who supported them—parents, teachers, mentors, and friends. 2. The Power of Goodness: After serving as a CEO for 14 years, I shifted my focus to addressing a critical issue: the diminishing presence of goodness in society. This led to the founding of Mission Chetna, which supports selfless individuals we call “Chetna Heroes.” Over 50 NGOs across 12 states have been empowered, impacting 10 million lives. Today, I see potential “Chetna Heroes” in each graduate. 3. The Three Ps for National Progress: I introduced the PPP Indexto complement GDP, focusing on: - Poverty : Addressing the bottom 10%. - Pollution :Improving air, water, and soil quality. - Personal Social Responsibility (PSR) : Each individual's contribution to society. While India's GDP grows, addressing the PPP index is critical for our future. 4. Career and Life Mantras: - Create a Vision and Mission for Your Life: Define your long-term goals and stay true to them. - Uphold Integrity: Trust is built on integrity—it is your most valuable asset. - Strive for Excellence: Success follows excellence. Evolve not just in your career, but in life. - Stay Humble and Grateful: Acknowledge the support, luck, and blessings you receive. True success comes from kindness, humility, and generosity. - Quality Over Quantity: Earn money with integrity. Wealth obtained dishonestly disrupts peace and happiness. 5. A New India Awaits: Graduates are stepping into a transforming India, but addressing societal issues using the PPP framework is vital. The time to act is now to build a stronger, more humane society. Over the years, I have noticed that social work differs in duration and type of interventions to target segment of population. I first noticed this when I thought of "long duration accelerators" like Karta Initiative which pick talented people from bottom of the pyramid, nurture them over a long duration before enabling them to get graduation opportunities in marquee universities in India and abroad. This contrasts with the "Youth Employment Program" of TCS which delivers short sharp interventions to targeted under privileged segments and enables these segments to get employed in leading companies. Today after a quick discussion regarding "sustainable rehabilitation after rescue from slavery", I realized that sustainable liberation comes in many shapes and sizes. Many segments of populations are stuck in "spaces" (of different kinds) and face "snake and ladders" journeys (first eloquently described as such in the context by one of my connections in Microinsurance). Upward social mobility is rarely simple and straight forward. Many movies show disadvantaged neighbourhoods where the storyline illustrates this "snake and ladders" reality of the life of many people. The rest of us have much more protections from different snakes. Some of us have access to different ladders. Unfortunately the public mind blames victims for not progressing because we rarely see the "snakes and ladders" reality of victim lives. Upward social mobility need much more effort from the person. Societies can make it easy. Social work of different kinds is important to help assuage the "snakes and ladders" aspect of lives to increase Upward social mobility.
