I view the BOAT as a natural evolution of the Hyperautomation thesis, which was premised on: 1)       Automation is a key business capability for achieving Digital transformation 2)       As many processes and tasks as possible should be automated. 3)       Automate different use cases using different automation tools, such as BPA, RPA, Low-Code, or iPaaS. Why BOAT is a natural evolution to elevate Hyperautomation? 1)       Companies have adopted different automation tools to create a large number of unconnected automated applications that deliver siloed efficiency gains. 2)       To realize strategic AI benefits beyond the current task-focused tactical AI benefits, one must look beyond automating many independent tasks or use cases. Instead, one must explore how to optimize operations end-to-end adaptively by operationalizing AI. 3)       Create end-to-end business orchestrations incorporating multiple automation technologies while preserving adaptability to enable AI-driven mass customization by supporting the unpredictable and probabilistic nature of AI/Gen AI. 4)       Using AI to enable coordination and interoperability across processes, called the 'Automation Fabric' at AgilePoint, to achieve a new level of intelligent operation optimization. The BOAT can also be viewed as the outcome of refocusing on software engineering innovation (the 'How') rather than simply comparing different classes of automation technologies (the 'What'). My understanding comes from discussions with Paul Vincent, who retired from Gartner in early 2024.
