Ahlberg, paints on a large canvas. The historiography of the Reagan administration in foreign affairs used to be focused on the Cold War endgame, considering whether it pursued a concrete plan to end the Cold War, either through bringing down the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics through “negotiated surrender,” or whether its Cold War strategy was marked by a “Reagan Reversal” between a confrontational first term and a conciliatory second characterized by negotiation between the superpowers. Newer works have interrogated the role of democracy promotion under Reagan, the impact of neoliberal economic policies set in motion by the administration at the end of the Cold War, and the extent to which its foreign policy set the stage for the “unipolar moment” of the 1990s and early twenty-first century. The inclusion of sources on a wide range of topics, such as Reagan’s policy toward the Soviet Union, foreign aid and economic policy, the Middle East, democracy promotion, policy toward the Pacific, terrorism, and other policy areas, in this volume allows historians to examine how these issues were understood and integrated into the collective foreign policy philosophy of the Reagan administration. In so doing, _Foundations of Foreign Policy_ depicts an administration that was simultaneously attempting to conceptualize and establish a framework for managing the Cold War while also seeking to integrate emerging global trends and policy areas that would become fundamental for US foreign policy in the post-Cold War era into its thinking....

The topic of corrections comes up a lot in comms. There’s some new research on this that is kind of interesting. Here is an excerpt from an article summarizing the findings: “…people generally trust journalists when they confirm claims to be true but are more distrusting when journalists correct false claims. Some linguistics and social science theories suggest that people intuitively understand social expectations not to be negative. Being disagreeable, like when pointing out someone else’s lie or error, carries with it a risk of backlash. We reasoned that it follows that corrections are held to a different, more critical standard than confirmations. Attempts to debunk can trigger doubts about journalists’ honesty and motives. In other words, if you’re providing a correction, you’re being a bit of a spoilsport, and that could negatively affect how you are viewed.” #mediarelations #psychology #sociology #PR
