We had the privilege of attending a #Juneteenth event at Penn State Health , where I listened to the captivating words of Floyd Stokes . His passion for reading and family was truly inspiring. Before his daughter read to us, Floyd shared a poignant story about his grandmother, who was born 24 years before the abolition of slavery and lived to be an incredible 113 years old. Her lived experiences serve as a powerful testament to the resilience and strength of the African American community. As I listened to Floyd's story, I couldn't help but reflect on my own grandmother, who didn't have the opportunity to graduate from high school. Yet, she beamed with pride at each of her children’s and grandchildren's graduations, cherishing every milestone and celebration. These personal connections underscore the true essence of Juneteenth – a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of family and community. Unlike Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which honors the life and legacy of the extraordinary civil rights leader, or Black History Month, which celebrates the achievements and central role of Black Americans in US history, Juneteenth holds a distinct significance. It is a day to connect with our roots, understand the experiences of those who came before us, and appreciate how far we've come while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead. Organizations can play a crucial role in promoting understanding and observance of Juneteenth, fostering a more inclusive work culture. Let's Tim it Up! Topic: Interim Positions When an interim leader steps into an organization, there is limited time to build relationships, yet there is an urgent need to identify and discuss priorities and team dynamics. The department team assessment is critical; understanding what they need and want is paramount. I focus on three areas. 1. Training 2. Guidance 3. Tools to be successful Then, I work my way through Operations to asses each process: 1. Receiving 2. Distribution 3. Inventory/PAR/POC Management 3. Purchasing 4. Purchase Services 5. Vendor Relationships 6. Customer Service (communications) The most crucial aspect is team dynamics. Is the team bought in? Remember that the team is the grease that keeps things moving. Defining roles and reviewing job descriptions for accuracy is an important piece. A checklist is a great place to start, but don't become too rigid; not everything is broken; they might need some tweaking. Checklist for Interim Supply Chain Leaders in Healthcare: - Assess Current Operations: Evaluate existing workflows, pinpoint inefficiencies, and comprehend the supply chain's present condition. - Understand Financial Health: Review the budget, expenditures, and financial statements to determine the supply chain's fiscal status. - Evaluate Vendor Relationships: Review existing vendor agreements, evaluate performance and expenses, and seek opportunities to renegotiate or engage new vendors. - Implement Technology Solutions: Investigate and adopt technological solutions to enhance operations, like AI-enhanced ERP systems for improved prediction. - Optimize Inventory Management: Maintain inventory at levels that satisfy demand without resulting in surplus or shortage.
