🔍 As we all know, the CPA profession faces a shortage of new CPAs and accounting graduates. A current shortage as well as a pipeline shortage. Last year the AICPA commissioned the National Pipeline Advisory Group (NPAG) to study this shortage and provide recommendations for enhancing the CPA pipeline. The NPAG is comprised of 22 professionals who are CPAs and accountants in the profession.💼 NPAG offered six draft recommendations to restock the talent pipeline. The NPAG's data-driven & inclusive approach hopes to bring about meaningful & long term change. From reshaping education to enhancing the employee experience, their recommendations aim to address critical challenges. NPAG's first recommendation focuses on addressing the time and cost of education. They propose three concepts emphasizing competency over academic experience, potentially revolutionizing CPA licensure requirements. 🎓💰 The second recommendation suggests making academic experiences more engaging. NPAG endorses efforts to retool introductory university courses and improve support for students progressing into more challenging coursework. 📚👩‍🏫 Enhancing the employee experience is another priority, with NPAG highlighting the need for competitive starting salaries and manageable workloads. They urge employers to make tasks more interesting and advancement opportunities clearer. 💼💡 NPAG stresses the importance of prioritizing strategies to expand access for underrepresented groups, advocating for targeted messages and closer relationships with minority-serving institutions. 🌍🤝 Support for CPA exam candidates is also crucial, with NPAG recommending addressing exam costs, simplifying the application process, and rewarding professionals for passing exam sections. 📝💼 Lastly, NPAG emphasizes the importance of telling a more compelling story about the accounting profession to attract talent. While there’s still a wealth of talent out there, many qualified professionals are turned off by the expectations of the Big 4 accounting firms. Taxpayers who filed an extension have until 10/15/2024 to file their tax returns. If you have all your documents ready, there is no advantage in waiting to file closer to the due date; filing sooner will save the taxpayer the worry of missing the deadline. Below are some important items about the extended due date of October 15th: • It’s the due date to file the return and pay the balance due as well. • If you can’t pay the balance when you file, paying as much as possible to minimize late payment penalties and interest is still recommended. • For the taxpayers who can’t pay at all, the IRS offers various options to deal with open balances such as a payment plan. If you’re waiting for documents to file, the IRS recommends requesting the documents directly from the issuer, such as your employer or payer, to get your documents and be able to complete and file your return. As organizations try to combat accounting talent shortages, some finance professionals have called for decreased CPA requirements to lower barriers of entry into the field. The 150 hour rule is one requirement that has received criticism as finance leaders grapple with making the CPA license more accessible. This rule mandates accountants to complete 150 hours (or approximately 5 years) of university credits to be eligible for a CPA license. - Some professionals argue that decreasing the 150 hour rule will encourage more people to enter the profession, stating that many students are favoring other master degrees such as an MBA over a masters of accountancy. - Those opposing this change cite concerns about lower work quality. 🚨 Hot off the press... 🚨 150-Hour Requirement Under Review in California The California Board of Accountancy is considering a significant change that could reshape the landscape for aspiring CPAs. They're exploring the possibility of eliminating the 150-hour educational requirement, with plans to discuss this at their July 2024 meeting. Yesterday, I received a survey from the CBA to gauge opinions on various aspects: 1) Would firms hire CPAs with only a bachelor's degree and not 150 hours of education? 2) Which college majors should be prerequisites for the CPA? 3) Most interestingly: Would we support reducing the 150-hour requirement if it meant CPAs couldn't easily transfer their license to other states? Interestingly, when I revisited the survey on a different computer to research for this post, I encountered a different set of questions. It seems the CBA is really trying to hone in on a potential new structure: Bachelor's degree: Requires 2 years of working experience Master's degree: Requires 1 year of working experience Let's be honest here - most associates hired right out of college don't know much about practical accounting. They may have some foundational knowledge, but they're not coming in with skills that make them immediately productive without significant on-the-job training. The AZ state board of accounting just made is slightly easier to get your CPA license: https://lnkd.in/eAGkigue Per the press release received: "The well-documented shortage of qualified accounting professionals is a manifestation of several interrelated forces: Aging Workforce - Many experienced accountants are nearing retirement age—the AICPA has suggested that 75% of accounting professionals are within 15 years of retirement—and there are not enough young professionals to take their place. Changing Industry Demands - Employers desire accounting candidates who have strong technical accounting backgrounds and skills in areas such as data analysis, information technology, and project management. However, many accounting programs have not fully adapted to meet these changing demands. Accounting Pipeline - The accounting pipeline refers to attracting, developing, and retaining talented individuals who can become successful accountants. The pipeline is a critical component of the accounting profession, as it helps to ensure a steady supply of skilled and knowledgeable professionals available to meet the needs of businesses and individuals. The profession has begun to recognize that the pipeline starts with attracting high school students into college accounting programs, and then from college accounting programs into professional accounting careers." Will loosening of professional standards effect audit quality? By allowing more time (30 months vs 18 months) to complete all four CPA exams, I think not. But this makes me think: is the 150-hour requirement that is relatively new to most states still appropriate given the above-mentioned shortage of CPA licensure? Luckily, when I originally got licensed, I made it in just before the 150-hour requirement went into effect.

Accountants are terrible resume writers! This might sting a little, but accountants are terrible resume writers. Hold on, before you start typing an angry comment, let me explain. Maybe your are part of the 25 or 30% that actually put a great resume together. Congratulations and well done!  I’m talking to the other 70 to 75% of you. After meticulously reviewing thousands of accounting and finance resumes and then delving into interviews with the candidates, it's become crystal clear to me that there's much room for improvement. This isn't a critique for critique's sake. Rather, it's a gentle nudge toward recognizing the importance of leveraging the expertise of a specialized recruiting agency. This is especially important for hiring managers who are missing out on great talent because their AI screening tool didn’t find the right keyword on a resume. I understand the nuanced intricacies of every role in the accounting and finance realm.
