Trying to measure “Innovation Strength” of OEMs in 2023 (!), and showing the top sellers in the BEV group - published today by Handelsblatt While I cannot change the Handelsblatt material and I find it really well done I suggest to call it “Electromobility Innovation Ranking” - see below *** why. A few details are needed. ➡️ The source of the ranking is the institute lead by Stefan Bratzel, Prof. Dr.: Center of Automotive Management (CAM) ➡️ the 2023 BEV Sales ranking on the right is straightforward ➡️ the column on the left is listing GEELY as leader for 2023 ➡️ interesting how neither Tesla or BYD took the top spot on the left, and where they are placed for 2023. ➡️ the long term ranking by innovation reads: 1 Tesla 2 Volkswagen Group 3 Geely 4 BYD 5 Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) *** ➡️ Methodology for the 2023 ranking: CAM individually evaluated 512 innovations in electromobility for the past year alone that ended up in the sold product. My learning from the post of Albert Pujol is, that unfortunately companies in the #automotiveindustry do not fully understand, what the potentials of #artificialintelligence could be specifically in operational areas of their businesses. Current discussions and informations are circulating almost entirely around Generative AI and LLM's. Generative AI is just one (important) part within the world of AI. Other topics like Deep Learning, Machine Learning, NLP etc. are (almost) being left out. And I agree with Albert Pujol: what are 10.000€ to 30.000€ worth compared to the potential benefits that can be created? AI-based digital assistants (Digital Colleagues) can also be a solution, which does not require a 'big investment' and can make a huge difference on improving performance. You need an example from operations? 60% cut in throughput time (cutting the the time, where no value has been added to the product) 50% cut in work-in-progress (means 'inventory' - means 'improving cash') 110% increase of value added time in production process => liquidity/cash improvement Overall result: cutting the number of extra shifts less temporarily workers needed => EBITDA-Improvement Do you need more? We are evaluating making Automotive an independent company and preparing a spin-off.  Due to the increasingly dynamic markets in the automotive industry, we as the Continental Executive Board have decided, following a strategic review, to conduct a further detailed evaluation on spinning off the Automotive group sector and listing it on the stock market. The aim of having two independent companies is to fully harness Continental’s value and growth potential.  Markets and customers, especially in the automotive industry, have evolved extremely dynamically in recent months. In response, we are aiming to divide Continental into two independent companies. Following the detailed evaluation, we on the Executive Board will make a decision on the spin-off in the fourth quarter of 2024. A spin-off and listing of Automotive would then be put to a vote by the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting of Continental AG on April 25, 2025. If approved, the plan is to complete the spin-off by the end of 2025. The preparations for a spin-off are already underway. It was a great pleasure to discuss the development of the Chinese car market with my colleague Jun JIN and Burkhard Riering, editor in chief of Automobilwoche, at our webcast session “From China - with love?”. Once again, it has become obvious how dynamic and innovative the Chinese market is. The numerous new brands popping up like mushrooms speak a clear language. At the same time, the uncompromising growth strategy to conquer market share is currently reaching its limits in China. Soon we will see consolidation. However, this is no reason for European OEMs to sit back and relax. The existing overcapacities will keep prices under pressure. Chinese OEMs will not be deterred from their path to Europe either. But they will probably focus more on co-operations and alliances in order to produce locally for local - whether brownfield or greenfield. European manufacturers should take advantage of the market momentum and continue on their chosen path of accelerated and agile product development. Rare Earth (RE) are now per se state owned in China. This effects 2/3 of the global magnet markets, which is de facto the market control for EVs. China shows now its teeth, as USA will ban Chinese passenger cars (expected tariff from 8/1: 100%) and Europe is threatening the same, but still in negotiations. 🔋 Exciting Insights from last week's Advanced Battery Power Conference There have been 2 days full of battery innovation and research at Münster with many talks, interesting speeches and high attendance numbers (>1,100). We FEV Europe GmbH had a stand at the booth and were able to hold many interesting discussions thanks to Bernd Hömberg, Prof. Martin Winter and Dirk Uwe Sauer. Here are my key findings: 📌 The most important prerequisites for EU competitiveness in the battery sector are low energy costs and industry funding. Current support from public authorities needs to be improved. In particular, EU research has made some gains in the development of solid-state battery cells, but CN consortia of cell suppliers will follow quickly 📌 Future cell formats will be mainly prismatic and cylindrical parallel, pouch with lower share 📌 Cell chemistry is evolving: LFP is further gaining traction; sodium-ion is becoming more interesting and NMC remains the choice for high energy applications. Interestingly, Solid-State technologies not have been in main focus beside the interest of the Chinese Suppliers forming a consortia… 📌 Main safety issues of last years due to thermal runaway / propagation are under control at system level, energy density vs. fast charging under discussion and cost reduction expected 📌 2nd life applications will be a niche; recycling and reprocessing will play an important role at the end of a battery product's life as customers in all sectors expect best performance 📌 Recycling is complex and not yet standardized, overcapacity is expected in the EU, but with little know-how; we can assume that the cost of battery cells will have to be increased in the future due to recycling, which will affect the attractiveness of the technologies; with the greatest negative impact on LFP, as the recycling of LFP is complex and the recycled raw materials are of low value 📌 the European gigafactories are starting operations, but initially see themselves as (fast) followers of the established suppliers => Battery production remains a challenge 📌 CO2 footprint of Li-Ion batteries is decreasing further to already <30kg CO2 / kWh with using renewable energy     Further I had the honor to lead a session for "battery application" together with Jörg Huslage with four interesting presentations 1️⃣ "Premium Platform Electric (PPE): development of superior charging performance" by Bernhard Rieger 2️⃣ "Battery-in-the cloud for modelbased adaptive control strategies" by Dr. Gerald Rämisch 3️⃣ "Safety Requirements of Stationary Energy Storage Systems for the North American Market" by Juergen Boeck 4️⃣ "Application Driven Differences in Design and Operation of Large-Scale Batteries" by Susanne Lehner 🙏 Thanks to all participants, speakers and organizers for the great event! #Battery #cell #fev
