Last but not least at Becker's Healthcare CEO/CFO conference - terrific panel led by my ECG Management Consultants colleague Steve McMillen, including Andrew Chang from UChicago Medicine, Patrick Cockey from Jefferson Health, and Maura Buxton from CVS Health. Topic: The Digital Patient Experience. Fascinating discussion in which the panelists agreed on many things, but productively disagreed on some topics. These are my favorite panel discussions, where constructive disagreement fosters truly engaging dialogue. Some of my takeaways (not attributed to any individual member of the panel): (1) The term "digital front door" can imply that we want everyone to begin their journey with us on a device or through an app; we really should be talking about making every channel accessible and seamless. (2) Improving patient experience is necessary but not sufficient; any solution should also simplify provider workflow. (3) We have a lot to learn from our existing patients and consumers, but also much to learn from those who choose NOT to engage with us digitally. #patientexperience #leadership #healthcare

My defense of the "point solution" - overall, I've generally viewed these digital health companies to be more successful in the long-run. Building a horizontal platform means you’re more things to more people. It requires you to raise a ton of money and doesn’t give you a ton of insights into product/market fit. The digital health rhetoric these days seems to be quite polarizing. While acknowledging the pivotal role of technology in enhancing health, we are still in the early innings for healthcare tech as it relates to the transformative impact many had expected to come to fruition. I sat down with my long-time friend and colleague, Mona Siddiqui, MD, MPH, MSE, leader Highmark Health to put together our thoughts on how to truly create scale in healthcare through technology. M7 Health is scaling, and we are growing our team! Two years ago, Eric Gruskin and I had just incorporated M7. We had no team and most days we were working off of a folding table in the (truly) empty NYC apartment that my husband and I had just moved to.   We were cold-calling nurse managers around the country to give us feedback on our MVP. We didn't even have software - we serviced our first clients with elaborate spreadsheet models. 🤔Private Equity and Healthcare seem to have a complicated relationship. A recent PitchBook report reveals some intriguing insights about PE investments in healthcare. Despite the buzz, PE investment in healthcare providers remains a small slice of the pie, making up less than 4% of the U.S. healthcare provider market by revenue. Interestingly, the growth in PE-backed providers has significantly slowed over the past six years. 📉 The numbers tell a compelling story: year-over-year growth in the number of PE-backed healthcare companies has plummeted from nearly 25% in 2018 to under 1% in the first quarter of this year. In response, PE firms are pivoting from traditional provider investments to areas like healthcare IT and pharmaceutical services. 💡 While PE investments continue to face scrutiny regarding their impact on care quality and costs, it's clear that firms are innovating and finding new ways to contribute to the healthcare sector. CFO's are facing mounting and growing pressure in meeting cash flow targets. In a survey of over 75 CFO’s in the hospital realm, the focus is on rebuilding cash reserves post-pandemic by cutting costs and increasing revenue through service line management. These efforts are often mired in difficulties – from payment vulnerabilities to high denial rates, to underpayments, to resource gaps – and more. So the question really is – what can be done to help position our healthcare systems, something vital to the survival of our country – in a better way, and bypass some of these challenges? In the marketplace, we’ve managed to put together a comprehensive solution package under Healthcare Evolution Group, with help for nearly every issue presented in this article. - PERC’s – with no upfront cost, we create brand new revenue at margins hospital systems can not create themselves.
