The coating is a thin layer that gives the tubing its shiny appearance. While the coating might look cosmetic, damage to the coating can lead to costly repairs and serious risks to patients. Coating damage typically takes two forms: - Slicing: Physical cuts on the coating often signal the start of more significant damage. - Blistering: Round bubbles that resemble skin blisters, which can lead to the coating tearing away in large areas. Both types of damage create openings that can trap bioburden, cleaning chemicals, or residues from disinfectants or sterilants (sometimes all three). Fortunately, the root causes of both slicing and blistering are usually easy to identify: - Transportation mishandling: Slices to the insertion tube most often occur during the transportation phase of reprocessing, especially for small-diameter scopes. There are two ways slicing can occur: 1. When scopes are placed in containers with other instruments. To prevent this damage, scopes should not be placed in containers with other instruments, especially those with sharp edges. 2. From the baskets. The rigid metal baskets have small openings to facilitate draining during sterilization, but the small flexible scope tips can poke out through the openings and get sliced on the edges. - Using unapproved disinfectants: Blistering often happens when a low-level disinfectant or sterilant is used before the scope is transferred from decontamination to the prep-and-pack area of Sterile Processing. Similarly, using an unvalidated sterilization method for the scope can also cause blistering. If you notice coating damage on your repair reports, you can narrow down your process audits to a few specific areas (e.g., transportation and manual cleaning), uncover the potential causes, and address these preventable issues quickly. *Identified through analysis of tens of thousands of repair reports. REMSleep Holdings, Inc. (@remsleep), a sleep apnea solutions provider, has announced an additional delay in the launch of its Deltawave nasal pillows mask. The company cited regulatory compliance and coordination with suppliers as key factors contributing to the postponement. 'We regret these delays, but we take comfort in knowing that the Deltawave is an unequivocal super star which will make a huge impact on the market,' the company stated. 'We are confident every distributor on the map will want to offer the Deltawave and next generation REMSleep masks in the future.' Despite the setback, REMSleep remains optimistic about the product's potential. The company has secured two major distributors and is upgrading its website to better showcase its current and upcoming offerings. Additionally, new product development efforts continue, with molds in the pipeline for a smooth regulatory approval process. 'One thing should be clear to our investors, we are all determined to get the Deltawave as well as other new products into the marketplace,' the statement read.
