The UN and partners, including the NDC Partnership, have announced the regional meetings, "NDCs 3.0 Regional Fora," which aim to raise ambition in the next round of climate pledges amid record temperatures and climate impacts. Organized by UN Environment Programme, UNDP, UN Climate Change and the NDC Partnership, the NDCs 3.0 Regional Fora will help countries align the next round of their climate commitments with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees C and increasing resilience to climate impacts. NDCs 3.0 Regional Fora will take place in: 📍The Pacific: 12-16 Aug., Samoa 📍Latin America & Caribbean: 27-29 Aug., Colombia 📍Eastern Europe & Central Asia: 3-5 Sep., Türkiye 📍Middle East & North Africa: 23-25 Sep., Tunisia 📍Asia: 30 Sep-2 Oct., Thailand 📍Africa: 7-9 Oct., Rwanda Meeting a 1.5-degree target requires reducing global #GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 and urgent, country-driven adaptation backed by appropriate finance. About the fora: ✅ The fora will use insights from COP28 and the Global Stocktake to focus on mitigation options, adaptation solutions and the inclusion of super pollutants in #NDCs. ✅ Participants will engage in peer learning, explore financing models and develop policy roadmaps for implementation. ✅ As climate change drives nature and biodiversity loss, the fora will encourage countries to align climate targets with commitments on nature, pollution and sustainable development in their NDCs. The NDCs 3.0 Regional Fora are organized in collaboration with partners including the UNEP-convened Climate & Clean Air Coalition, UN-REDD Programme, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and regional partners like Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), United Nations APDIM-ESCAP , United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Only 44 Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs) specifically mention just transition. 📝 The Task Force on Fiscal Policy for Health, co-chaired by Mike Bloomberg, Lawrence H. Summers, and Mia Amor Mottley, of which CGD is secretariat, has released its new report. The findings show that if countries increase excise taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugary beverages enough to raise prices by 50%, an astounding $3.7 trillion could be raised over the next five years. Not only could these taxes generate much-needed revenue for governments, but they could also prevent millions of premature deaths caused by noncommunicable diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. ➕ $2.1 trillion of this revenue could be raised in low- and middle-income countries, where the health burden is greatest. ➕ 50 million premature deaths could be prevented over the next 50 years. 🔉How can we ensure that Afghanistan’s climate solutions are rooted in the experiences of its communities? Afghanistan ranks eighth among 170 nations in vulnerability to climate change—with nearly 60% of the population affected by climate shocks, compared to 19% by security-related shocks. While there have been efforts to address these issues, including bans on forest cutting and promoting reforestation, the ability of communities to cope with droughts, floods, and extreme weather has reduced. 🚨 Climate change disproportionately impacts Afghan women and girls. Often serving as "shock absorbers," they face heightened risks such as food insecurity, dropping out of school, forced marriages, and gender-based violence. Water scarcity further increases these threats, displacing more people than conflict and increasing vulnerabilities, particularly for women and people with disabilities. Afghanistan also urgently needs a systematic Early Warning System (EWS) for effective disaster risk reduction. Engagement is particularly vital when addressing climate challenges—there is no excuse not to act to protect men, women, youth, girls, and boys. Each of these groups, some more than others, need our support. 🔍 As we reflect on the past three years, it's evident that climate change is a crisis we cannot afford to ignore. It intersects with and impacts every aspect of life in Afghanistan, affecting everyone. Our partnership with Resilience, Environment and Humanitarian Aid (REHA) Organization is crucial for tackling the climate and water crisis in Afghanistan.
