Fin Capital’s Fintech CEO Pulse Report is out! We surveyed over 50 CEOs and C-suite leaders of private companies from our portfolio and the broader fintech industry during June and July 2024 to get a quick pulse on what’s top of mind for fintech’s leaders. Here are some key takeaways: Optimism in the Air: More than 60% of CEOs reported being bullish or highly bullish on the fintech industry for the second half of 2024. Regulatory Changes on the Horizon: CEOs identified Cryptocurrency, Open Banking, and Buy Now Pay Later as the top three sectors likely to see increased regulation by the end of 2024. Founders, this is how you can incentivize your employees with a stock option plan. Relying on cash alone to incentivize talent at an early stage does not work. Also the risk is higher and you have limited funding. Your first hires will most likely take a pay cut to join and rely on equity to get skin in the game. Also, with no equity, some employees might stay for a paycheck but not for the long haul. There's a better way: Design your compensation strategy to empower your team. 1. Align employee goals with company success. 2. Offer stock options that grow with your company. 3. Communicate transparently about the value of equity. While doing that, set up your stock option plan properly. Valuation, hiring plan, equity pools, and vesting schedules. For valuation (490A) and vesting schedules, Carta is a great tool. The size of your option pool is something you need to spend more time on. 1. It's highly dependent on your hiring plan. 2. Define how many people, at what level (co-founder, exec, lead, etc), you will need until your next round of funding. 3. Structure the size of you option pool to match your needs as it will difficult to increase it between rounds. 4. Choose your vesting period - typically 4 years with 1-year cliff. Remember that equity grants in the form of stock options is about building a committed and invested team. Your compensation strategy should enhance employee loyalty, not just fill a role. In April, OpenAI Controller Sowmya Ranganathan walked me through how her accounting team leverages ChatGPT to revolutionize the close process. I instantly knew we needed to share her story with the broader finance community. Accuracy and process are core to accounting workflow, so it can be intimidating to stray from traditional approaches. In our webinar last week, Sowmya walked through some brilliant demos, illuminating how you can automate repetitive and time-consuming tasks with ease. When you’re repeating a task that takes more than a few minutes in Excel - or something you hate about the close process, rewire your brain to find a way to automate it. Those minutes quickly add up to streamline your day-to-day workflow. This works with the close process, but also many other projects in finance and beyond. ⚫ Be curious about code. While she’s not a trained programmer, Sowmya uses ChatGPT to create Python scripts to build pivot tables and parse through massive CSVs. Her team can categorize a full month of OpenAI’s Azure usage data 👀 in 10 seconds 👀, whereas before they’d have to manually process the data every few days to avoid hitting Excel’s row limits. ⚫ Train ChatGPT on your company’s specific guidelines. After Sowmya ran a prompt to recognize revenue from a transaction file, she asked ChatGPT to cross-check it against their audit firm’s ASC 606 guidelines, which she uploaded as a PDF. The result was nearly the same, but it added an extra step to protect against hallucinations. And, she always triple-checks the results. ⚫ Don’t fear the error message. Pre-ChatGPT, if she was working on an automation project and received a technical error message, she might have given up. Today, Sowmya dumps the message back into ChatGPT, where it can diagnose and resolve any issues. You can see this problem-solving in action during her demo! A big thank you to Sowmya for sharing this hands-on demo and giving finance leaders the confidence to test it out themselves. Should I use only equity for my search fund acquisition? 👇 If you can convince enough shareholders to part with their cash in order to purchase a company, this is the simplest way to go. A few thoughts: 1. Equity carries no covenants or external limits on how you and your team run the company. 2. Since there’s no debt, you have a higher risk tolerance. 3. Equity investors are patient. Debt holders are not. 4. Investors get well rewarded for shared success. If you do well, they do very well. This can make it easier to raise capital. 5. Some companies are not a good fit for debt. Lenders like predictable cash flow, hard assets and a history of profitability. 6. Equity is easy to raise compared to debt, which involves due diligence, counterparty risk, and tight terms. On the other hand, equity is expensive. You will have to give away the value of the money up front, and more.
