🌟 Exciting Infrastructure Development in D.C.! 🌟 CBNA and Halmar have been awarded an $819 million contract by DC Water to construct the Potomac River Tunnel, the largest project in the authority's history. This 5.5-mile tunnel is a major component of the Clean Rivers Project, a $2.99 billion initiative aimed at improving water quality in the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek. 🔹 The PRT will significantly reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Potomac River by 93% during typical rainfall years, enhancing water quality and environmental sustainability. 🔹 The 18-foot-diameter tunnel will traverse beneath Georgetown, West Potomac Park, and the National Mall, connecting to the existing Anacostia River Tunnel. 🔹 Timeline: Construction is set to begin in 2024, with completion expected by early 2030. A LOT of the people in the geotechnical contracting industry will be very happy to know that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have issued a final rule to promote competition by banning non-competes nationwide!! 👀 👀 The FTC estimates that the final rule banning non-competes will lead to new business formation growing by 2.7% per year, resulting in more than 8,500 additional new businesses created each year. The final rule is expected to result in higher earnings for workers, with estimated earnings increasing for the average worker by an additional $524 per year, and it is expected to lower health care costs by up to $194 billion over the next decade. In addition, the final rule is expected to help drive innovation, leading to an estimated average increase of 17,000 to 29,000 more patents each year for the next 10 years under the final rule. In its final ruling, the Commission has concluded that it's unfair and a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act for employers to engage in noncompete agreements with workers and enforce specific terms within those agreements. The Commission's investigation revealed that noncompete agreements have a detrimental impact on competitive dynamics within labor markets, hindering the efficient pairing of workers with employers. Additionally, it was found that these agreements also have adverse effects on competitive dynamics within product and service markets, impeding the formation of new businesses and stifling innovation. Furthermore, there is evidence suggesting that noncompete agreements contribute to increased market consolidation and higher prices for consumers. FAIR GAME NOW BABY LETS GO!!

About Interstate 5. For Santa Clarita Valley residents, construction of the interstate freeway from the Mexican border to Canada was really one more in a long line of highway improvements stretching back 50 years to the opening of the Ridge Route across the mountaintops to the floor of the San Joaquin Valley and beyond to Bakersfield. The original route was followed by the new and improved "Ridge alternate," which gave way in 1933 to the even newer — and straighter — U.S. Highway 99. Interstate 5 was born on paper in 1956 through the Eisenhower-era National Interstate and Defense Highway Act, which diverted money from the defense budget to link strategic military facilities via a modern highway system that civilians would also be able to use. It was late in John F. Kennedy's presidency before there was tangible evidence of it locally. Just as the new State Route 14 was starting to open section-by-section on the east side of the valley in 1963, the first eight-lane section of Interstate 5 was underway on the west side between Lyons Avenue and about one mile north of Castaic Junction (Highway 126). The Newhall Land and Farming Co., with its new town of Valencia on the drawing board, successfully lobbied for additional on- and off-ramps where originally only one was planned. By that time, actually in July 1964, the California Highway Commission came up with a bizarre idea to save money on engineering that was otherwise needed to make the steep climb north of Parker Road manageable for trucks. The existing Highway 99, which was decommissioned locally that same year, would become the northbound I-5 freeway lanes, while southbound lanes would be separated off to the east. That meant the north- and southbound lanes would switch sides, with an upper and lower crossover to put them back where they belong. At that same 1964 Highway Commission meeting, the decision was made to separate cars and trucks in the Newhall Pass with their own dedicated lanes. Construction of the new Interstate 5 Freeway through the Santa Clarita Valley was completed in 1967, coinciding with the opening of the first Valencia homes. Construction over the Grapevine and into the San Joaquin Valley, with separate alignments for each direction of traffic — but without switching sides — was done by 1970. The final section in California, near Stockton, opened in 1979.

It’s been getting ridiculous, I as the President and 100% owner of a well established practice, gets 2 LinkedIn requests a week to apply for their job! Seriously, if engineering companies want to solve their problems, stop treating Professional Surveyors less than Engineers, pay them what their value is, when you subcontract firms like mine, stop trying to do the pay when paid contracts, we don’t play that game! Moreover, the large firms need to stop buying smaller firms and then ruining the culture and quality of that firm! To begin with 3 x EBITA is insulting, 9x or higher is the value! The small firm looses more employees when you buy them anyway, than if you just contracted small firms and paid their normal rates net 30 period! Stop trying to make Surveyoring firms operate like engineering firms, we are more closely aligned with law firms! My two cents!

It’s #NationalRiversMonth, a time to highlight projects helping to keep rivers healthy, mitigate flooding, and deliver the clean, reliable water communities need to thrive. For example: when #PFAS was identified in the Cape Fear River. Turning to Black & Veatch, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) integrated granular activated carbon (GAC) technology at the Sweeney Water Treatment Plant, whose intake draws from the river. The project gave CFPUA critical operational flexibility to operate the plant in multiple configurations and adapt to changing source water conditions as well as rapidly evolving regulations. Since the project was completed, testing has shown at or near non-detect levels for PFAS in the plant’s treated water – a victory for the Cape Fear River’s water quality and the communities served by CFPUA. Have you heard of it? Consider adding it to your watch list. These firms may be open to hire people without specific construction experience (like me) as they are essentially software companies?! But, unlike my AEC application stories (lacking AEC 🤢 experience), I have recruited for jobs listed on Procore Technologies's career page, including: C/S, DTS, Engineering, TA, MarCom, Product, RevOps, and Sales. While not construction-specific, my technical experience includes mobile and web software with .Net, UX and QA hiring, and Python (SWE, Architects, QA) and candidates who need to be experts with tools like Tableau, Power BI, and R. As a former programmer, my software screens focus on "why" an answer is correct. We also discuss "when" to use logic or hard coded solutions.
