Efficiently managing a Proof of Concept (PoC) is crucial in cybersecurity sales. Here are some important things to consider: 🔍 Qualify opportunities first: Don’t rush to a PoC. Before starting the PoC, ensure there’s a qualified project; meaning there’s an active project, defined budget, defined timeframe that you and the customer agree on, and the customer verbally commits to moving to a production environment immediately after the PoC ends. This helps avoid wasting time and resources. ❗ Allocate appropriate resources: Solution engineers guide the customer through the PoC process, and ensure the customer recognizes that your product alleviates a need and solves a concern they have. Vendors typically spend 4 hours with a customer during the PoC. This can be one hour per week for a month, or spread over a shorter period; say two, 2-hour sessions, or one 4-hour session. A real buyer wants to get through the PoC as expeditiously as possibly, then implement your product into their production environment. ⌚ Set clear expectations: Define in advance the PoC duration and objectives with the customer. Ensure both parties understand the goals and timelines, to prevent any ambiguity. 🎯 Smooth transition to production: Aim for a seamless move from PoC to production. This keeps the momentum going and increases the likelihood of closing the deal. 📃 Begin procurement process in parallel with the PoC: After the first PoC session, ask the customer if it would make sense to begin the procurement process in parallel with the PoC. If the customer doesn’t agree, then they don’t see value in your product; they don’t believe your product can alleviate their specific needs, or they don’t really have a defined budget to move to production after the PoC. The Ticketmaster breach is another example of how vital good cyber hygiene and an endless pursuit of maturity are. Toby Lewis correctly states, “Cybersecurity should be at the forefront of businesses’ technology strategy.” Cybersecurity and security, in general, need to be contemplated at every layer and conversation. A simple tabletop exercise is a perfect way to understand the implications of an organizational change. These exercises do not always need to be overly exhaustive. However, they should challenge the stakeholders to think differently. Narayana P. recalls breaches can have a “significant long-term impact” on any organization.   Just last week, I spoke with the CEO of a start-up biopharma company about to make its first big public announcement. We discussed the cybersecurity scenarios that could play out and threat actors that would try to capitalize on their upcoming announcements. The art of challenging each other to think differently about the organization's crown jewels and possible identification, protection, detection, recovery, and response capabilities to protect those key assets was extremely fruitful.
