Reflecting on my recent trip to Chile and Argentina with my Executive MBA class from VCU, I'm struck by the profound insights gained throughout the week. Sustainability emerged as a central theme across diverse industries, highlighting its significance as a strategic imperative for long-term business success. Engaging discussions with industry leaders underscored the critical role of sustainability in various facets of business operations. From risk management talk with Marsh & McLennan to exploring avenues for growth with the U.S. Commercial Service, delving into challenges within the copper mining sector with Anglo American or entrepreneurial dialogues in the software industry with Globant, each interaction emphasized the Environmental, Social, and Governance challenges prevalent in today's landscape. Sustainability transcends mere altruism; it yields tangible benefits such as enhanced profitability, cost reduction, heightened employee satisfaction and retention, and favorable brand perception among consumers. As I return home, I am committed to furthering my understanding of sustainability, recognizing its centrality amidst the dynamic shifts reshaping the business landscape in recent years. #VCUBusiness #Sustainability #ESG

Following the response to my recent post about my participation in Sci.STEPS mentorship program, I've noticed a strong interest in career development within my network.  Many of you, especially those in academic institutions, are curious about transitioning to industrial companies. This topic has been a recurring theme in conversations with my mentees over the past two mentorship seasons and during our "Industry and/or Academia" roundtable discussion. In light of this interest, I've decided to start a new project: collecting transition stories and practical advice from individuals who have moved between academia and industry. The goal is to provide valuable insights for those considering similar career moves. The connection between science and industry has always been a source of knowledge and skill exchange for me. It's a dynamic relationship that fosters innovation in both sectors. By sharing these experiences, we hope to illuminate the pathways between these two worlds and highlight the valuable cross-pollination of ideas that occurs. These insights will be presented as mini-interviews, which I'll share as a side project under the hashtags #A2I2A. This format will allow us to explore diverse perspectives and experiences, offering practical advice for those considering such transitions. It really doesn’t matter if you a tech company or a “traditional” business the principle is the same and you don’t have to opperate like a startup to achieve the same outcome. Although how many leadership teams take the time (3hrs) weekly to discuss what they working on🤔. Taking the time to work together creates common understanding, builds trust and unites teams, driving shared accountability/responsibility.
