The Pennsylvania Alliance for Design of Open Textbooks (PA-ADOPT) is pleased to announce the immediate availability of our ninth free and open eTextbook: "The Digital Storytelling Handbook" by Jordan Schugar, Professor of English, and Chris Penny, Professor of Educational Foundations & Policy Studies, at West Chester University of Pennsylvania (WCU). This eTextbook gives storytellers practical tools to help them think about different reasons for making digital stories and different ways to think about using and incorporating digital stories into teaching, learning, and living. In this eTextbook, readers will also learn how experiencing digital stories – as either the author or the audience – builds cultural competence and teaches us about humanity and the human experience. Co-authored with students, this eTextbook was written in the spirit of OER with the expectation that future readers and students have an opportunity to contribute a chapter, idea, approach, or methodology of the eTextbook’s basic content.”   Hudson, Le, Mangano, and McQuiston were all students in Dr. Penny's EDT 530: Digital Media Production and Storytelling course during the Spring 2024 semester. In this course, students participated in the development of an Open Educational Resource (OER) utilizing an approach known as Open Pedagogy. According to the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries, it is "the practice of engaging with students as creators of information rather than simply consumers of it. It's a form of experiential learning in which students demonstrate understanding through the act of creation. The products of open pedagogy are student created and openly licensed so that they may live outside of the classroom in a way that has an impact on the greater community." This is the first PA-ADOPT eTextbook to utilize Open Pedagogy. In light of the New Hampshire House set to vote down the proposed rural teacher recruitment fund, it's crucial to explore alternative solutions that don't rely solely on legislative action. AI development needs diverse voices and perspectives to be ethical and inclusive. As Verity Harding points out in "AI Needs You", "Greed is winning. When one of the richest and most powerful men in the world wants to help his workers by monitoring their muscles rather than asserting their humanity...it’s clear that something needs to change." We can't let AI development be driven solely by a narrow segment of society. We need everyone—academics, artists, historians, sociologists, ethicists, and more—to come together and shape the future of AI. In my paper, "From Ethics to Execution: The Role of Academic Librarians in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy-Making at Colleges and Universities," I argue that academic librarians have a crucial role to play in this process. Their expertise in information ethics, privacy, and intellectual freedom can guide the creation of AI policies that prioritize human rights and social responsibility. The New York State Education Department today presented its robust timeline and implementation plan aimed at transforming education in New York, aligning with the recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures. This initiative, designed to promote greater equity within the education system, is informed by extensive stakeholder engagement, including parents, educators, administrators, school support staff, representatives of higher education, and the business community. This approach ensures a collaborative and well-supported implementation of the recommendations for our school communities. To ensure that the proposed changes are implemented effectively, this plan adopts an intentional phased approach that allows for thorough planning, professional learning opportunities, and valuable stakeholder feedback as we transition from our current system. The Board of Regents must approve any changes to the State’s graduation requirements; until such time, the existing graduation requirements remain in effect for all public school students in New York.
