Under a study conducted by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), PNNL analyzed the benefits of completing 12 major Western transmission projects towards the development renewable energy projects. The study analyzed the Western transmission projects Boardman to Hemingway; Colorado Power Pathway; Cross-Tie; Greenlink North; Greenlink West; Gateway West; Gateway South; Southline; Sunzia DC; SWIP North; Ten West; and Transwest Express DC. The PNNL concluded that the completion of 12 major Western transmission projects is projected to assist in the development and energization of up to 73 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy. Among the 73 GW clean energy projects, these transmission projects would support up to 29 GW of solar, 29 GW of wind and 14.5 GW of energy storage. I know, I know, it feels like the 2021 Washington State Energy Code just took effect (probably because it did), but did you know that work on the next iteration of the WSEC is already underway? This will be referred to as the 2024 WSEC, but is scheduled for adoption in November of 2026.   I am just one of the many volunteer members of the WSEC Commercial Energy Code Technical Advisory Group and wanted to share with you all the progress that is being made.   As of our most recent TAG meeting, we completed review of the 2024 WSEC-Commercial "Integrated Draft", which means the text of the current 2021 WSEC was compared with the language of the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and where there were differences, we had to decide on which of the two was more stringent and keep that language. With the significant help of State Building Code Council (SBCC) staff, the final integrated draft will be released shortly.... and then the real fun begins.   The public will be able to review that draft and in early 2025 proposals for revisions or additions to the code will be accepted and evaluated for incorporation into the text. If you've ever come across a code section that you think could use improvement, clarification, or even complete overhaul, this will be your opportunity to suggest changes that could benefit the whole state, and I hope that entices you to participate!

TWAICE have worked alongside the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) on a joint study, offering in-depth analysis of the root causes of battery energy storage system (BESS) failure incidents. 🔋The report will help guide efforts to mitigate storage incidents in the future and minimise BESS risk. 📊The reports findings have shown that BESS failures can be linked to the design, manufacturing, integration, and operation phases of a project. 🔧 Codes, standards, and manufacturing expertise serve as a mitigation in design and manufacturing, there is a gap in safety practices in the integration and operation phases of a project. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)’s 2024 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings is coming up and Recurve will be there! Don’t miss Brian Gerke’s presentation on Recurve’s work with the California Energy Commission. Recurve used AMI meter data from across the state to measure a baseline saturation of AC and electric heating to inform electrification initiatives. Using data to understand energy consumption patterns is the key to designing and optimizing electrification initiatives that maximize customer benefits and have the greatest positive impact on carbon emissions and the grid. During 30 of the past 38 days, the California ISO was able to exceed 100% of demand (load) with wind, solar and hydro power for 0.25-6.00 hours. This is an important milestone on the path to SB 100's goal of 100% zero-carbon resources for all electricity sales by 2045. It is worth nothing, however, that the Golden State still has a lot of work to do to achieve this ambitious goal, due to its heavy reliance on conventional generation when the sun isn't shining. Ultimately, I believe that Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) will be the solution to storing excess power during the day and discharging it overnight. Xendee and Arizona State University invite you to become a certified microgrid design expert in three half days through our virtual course on creating distributed energy systems. The course costs $495 and includes an ASU certificate provided by the institution, and the opportunity for Continuing Education credits (CE/CEU). The big influx of battery storage on the California grid in the past two years is starting to have a lasting impact on one of the world’s biggest state grids, reshaping the demand curve, sucking in the tummy of the huge solar duck, and reducing the impact and dominance of fossil gas. What has been happening over the past few months in California – with battery storage pushing out gas as the major provider of power into the evening peaks, and soaking up rooftop solar in the middle of the day – is seen as a postcard for the future for many grids around the world..

Everyone knows that California has a lot of solar ☀ . This is critical for reducing the carbon emissions of the electricity system, but during some parts of the year (like right now), it causes a challenging phenomenon known as the “duck curve”. To combat this challenge California ISO has been adding battery storage to its network rapidly. 8,060.5 MW to be precise, more than every other US balancing authority combined (7,934.6 MW).
