It’s that time of year — back to school! I remember that first-day feeling—the excitement and energy of what the year will bring. While we hope our kiddos hold tight to that sense of hope and wonder, many parents feel the opposite. In fact, the US Surgeon General issued a warning last month that the pressure parents are under has become a public health problem. While parents feeling increasingly stressed may be the least surprising thing you hear today, the stats are jarring:  41% of parents reported they can’t function most days because of stress, and 48% said they’re completely overwhelmed by stress. We can do better. We must do better. And it starts by remembering that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s self-preservation. So, in keeping with that mindset, here are a few of my go-to tips to build better habits: ✨ Set clear and loud boundaries at work and at home, and be ruthless about prioritization to ensure you have the mental space to focus on the right task at the right time. ✨ Carve out time to be fully present with your loved ones. Have a dance party in the kitchen or read together at bedtime  — no matter what you do, it will be the best part of your day. ✨ Whether it's your colleagues, neighbors, or an online community, find your people and have a deep bench ready to listen, provide backup, and give you a much-needed boost when things get heavy. ✨ Don’t find the time for self-care — make the time. That doesn’t mean huge changes. You can start with minor and manageable adjustments. For example, I try to meditate for a few minutes every day, and now that it’s a ritual, it doesn’t feel like such a big commitment.  ✨ Take advantage of your benefits. I have talked openly about reaching out to Spring Health, Verizon’s EAP provider in the U.S., for counseling sessions and have encouraged employees to use our backup care for a date night. Tap into what’s available and never skip appointments or push off preventive care. I fully admit that none of this is easy. If it were, we would all be wellbeing experts. I also recognize that employers and policymakers play a huge role, and a lot needs to be done to properly support and care for caregivers that goes beyond our individual control. However, we can make incremental changes by dialing down guilt and dialing up self-care. So, as we help our kids take on a new school year, don’t forget to make the time and space to care for yourself — because you matter....today and always. Outside of the annual state of women at work report, one of my other favorite things that happens at this time of year are predictions for the following year and they are starting to come out. The first one I saw, drum roll please, is from AIHR | Academy to Innovate HR with 11 HR Trends for 2025. The highlight for me on this one is for the first time in numerous years it is iterative changes and not tackling wide and new challenges. I think it will give HR leaders a year to breathe, fine tune their current mandates, before tackling the next new unknown challenge that is sure to come. Key 2025 trends: 1. The word of 2024 was AI and the word for 2025 is AI adaptation. This includes training, policies, and how HR should use it. 2025 will be a year around the question is AI over hyped or underestimated ( I am in the over hyped category, where are you in this debate?). 2. A tipping point for skills mismatch. This has been the talk for a while, but the skills many of our current employees have and the skills we need for tomorrow are a mismatch and it is the buy vs build discussion. 3. Blue-collar and "new collar" jobs boom. As the September job report came out today, it shows job growth especially in blue collar type jobs like manufacturing and construction and for today that is where the job growth is in addition to "new collar" jobs think cyber-security and AI. 4. The golden age of the silver worker. The fastest growing work-segment is 75+ because they can't or don't want to retire. The upcoming worker shortage is real, so figuring out how to keep your silver workers longer, is important to think about and start to enact. 5.The women's equity effect ( see posting from last week it has an in-depth report on this one) 6. Looming org anxiety. Employees are nervous about their job stability and a global recession (job numbers in the US don't show that today)and it will become an employers market with the "Big Stay". 7. HR execution is king. This year HR tries to find the balance between strategic and tactical and getting it right and HR will become embedded in the core business. 8. The anti-fragile worker. The focus on employee well-being continues. 9. Employee engagement 2.0. Companies finally (maybe) focusing on and taking action of the drivers to increase employee engagement (nice pyramid graph showing this). What are your HR 2025 predictions trends? BUT... sounds like this has been happening for years and frankly, it needs to end now. The countdown has started! Many leaders working for Centra know the meaning of the words "Compensation Overhaul". It is a roadmap that started in the Fall 2022 and will culminate in pay equity and market adjustments in May 2024. The work is guided by these principles: 1.    Planning. 2.    Clarity through transparency. 3.    Process Consistency. 4.    Fairness. 5.    Purpose. 6.    Pay equity. 7.    Leadership accountability. Thanks to organization-wide support for the work, HR has created a compensation program and capability that will be a game changer for Centra's workforce and culture. Centra has implement standard pay structures and policies, clear criteria for promotion, and standardized documentation of compensation to minimize room for bias. Communicating clearly about pay equity is nearly 13 times as important for employee retention and engagement as talking about “high levels of pay and benefits,” according to a March 14 report from The Josh Bersin Co., a human capital advisory firm. "While most companies know they must increase pay during times of inflation, they do not understand the problems they create when people feel the system is unfair,” Josh Bersin said. Nobody said it was going to be easy.
