Many innovative ideas can become obscured when communicated, which was a significant challenge for Patient Blood Management #PBM as it was introduced to benefit those suffering from #anemia, in hopes of enabling surgery without the use of donated blood upon leaving the ER (Emergency Room). The PBM educational approach supports bloodless surgical procedures. To reduce this obscurity, we are simplifying the message and increasing awareness, benefiting #researchers, manufacturers, and healthcare practitioners. Most importantly, we are enhancing the patient experience and raising public awareness. For over three decades, major Patient Blood Management (#PBM) associations, #pharmaceutical companies, #manufacturers, and #bloodless surgery hospital programs have heavily marketed to doctors, believing their buy-in was essential. However, this approach may have overlooked broader areas of interest. In the past five years, we've shifted our focus to cultivating public interest in Patient Blood Management, becoming pioneers in this approach. This has proven immensely valuable, creating an engaged infrastructure between healthcare providers and patients, enhancing understanding and collaboration in this evolving field of medicine. To address emerging challenges such as patient experience, safety, communication, and language, we're excited to introduce our Collaborative Optimal Outcome Language (COOL) initiative. This program provides support and training for hospitals to adapt to changing trends, paradigm shifts, and the needs of this new healthcare culture. The engagement bridge we've constructed is now open for all stakeholders in PBM to have open public access as we work together in collaboration, exchange, and education of a new language in life.

We continue to see an elevated volume of clinical trial delays and cancellations across all therapeutic areas. In fact, this morning, bellwether CRO IQVIA Holdings (NYSE-IQV) reported soft 3Q24 results due to program cancellations and study delays. Also, IQVIA management commented that the Inflation Reduction Act is starting to materially negatively impact the R&D/product development strategies of large pharma companies with more portfolio re-prioritizations expected to be announced in the coming quarters. Finally, small/mid-sized biopharma companies are struggling to access capital causing many to delay/cancel R&D programs to save cash. This commentary from IQVIA follows similar talking points from ICON plc (NASDAQ-ICLR) and Medpace Holdings (NASDAQ-MEDP) last week. Altogether, IQVIA reported a book-to-bill ratio of only 1.06x in 3Q24 (vs the prior 3-year average of 1.32x). This was IQVIA’s lowest book-to-bill ratio for at least the last five years -- including during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, this trend of higher clinical trial delays and cancelations was a key topic of discussion at our recent Bourne Partners Annual Global Healthcare CEO Summit last week. In our view, the current period of volatility in biopharma R&D activity will likely further catalyze consolidation among software and service providers -- particularly clinical trial site networks and technology companies. In many cases, we think that being part of a larger diversified organization could be an increasingly attractive path forward for many single clinical trial sites, small site networks, and point software solution vendors.
