When you've been laid off as much as I have within the last 2 years you start think about it subconsciously....eventually it slips into your dreams. Last night I dreamt that I was laid off.... again I was told there wasn't enough work (which was why I was laid off at all my other positions) but I was confused because right now I'm swamped. This lead me to be not too happy with my boss. Eventually I chilled out and I thought, 'Okay, instead of jumping right on LinkedIn like I did in the past, I'm going to take the rest of the day to myself, get a goodnight sleep and start the job hunt in the morning.' So I did just that and then went to bed. Well I woke up this morning....very confused thinking, 'this was a dream, right? I actually have to get up to go to work, right? I have a job.....right?' Eventually in the haziness of my mind I realized it was a dream and I did still have a job and I could stop being mad at my director....sorry Daniel LOL This just goes to show the lasting impact layoffs have on people that have been through multiple job losses in a short amount of time. It even affects sleep. I'm grateful I found the organization I did and I'm treated the way I am. It's just gonna take me a bit of time to move past the impact my previous layoffs had on me. No I will not refer you... Unless I know you personally or have worked with you directly. Since becoming a recruiter, I’ve had many people I don’t know—or have never worked with—reach out asking me to refer them to open roles at my organization. Here’s the issue... I don’t know you! Referrals carry a lot of weight. Referring someone I’ve never worked with or don’t know well could backfire if they turn out to be a poor fit. Not only does it hurt the company, but it also reflects poorly on my character and reputation. While some companies offer referral bonuses, and that can be tempting, it’s not a risk I’m willing to take—especially since HR professionals typically aren’t eligible for those bonuses anyway. What’s even worse? When people see I’m hiring and automatically list me as their referral without even asking. That’s a major breach of etiquette! So, here’s a good rule of thumb: unless you’ve worked with someone or know them personally, don’t list them as a referral. The best candidates know how to make a resume speak directly to the job they’re after. Here are three things that I love to see on tailored resumes: Keywords That Match:  Successful candidates pick up on the language used in the job description and weave those keywords in naturally. It’s not just about getting past the ATS; it’s about showing you "get it" and know the industry. Achievements Over Duties:  Forget listing every task! Top candidates highlight their accomplishments and tie them directly to the role. Numbers are a big plus, whether it’s boosting revenue by 15%, reducing costs by 10%, or launching a project on a tight timeline. This shows the real value you bring. Hook ‘Em Right Away:  I’ll be honest—I’m not totally sold on the “Summary” section. But I am sold on grabbing attention right from the start! A strong resume should kick off with your top qualifications:  your education, experience with key programs (speaking of which, if you know PROMOD, PLEASE MESSAGE ME!), and anything else that shows why you’re a perfect fit. Extra points if you keep it specific to the job, with a mix of technical skills and personal qualities that match the role. Remember: Your resume is your story. I think there’s a common misconception that recruiting is a form of sales & maybe to some it is. But for me personally, my focus as a recruiter is not & never will be to sell you on the company. As a recruiter, I will do my best to ensure you’re paid every dollar you’re worth. I will always make a fighting case for you when I present you to hiring managers & will push back when needed. I’ll provide total transparency & communication throughout the process. I want to make sure we are a fit for you just as much as I want to make sure you are a fit for the company - that’s the only way to ensure long term success for all parties involved. I’ve been successful in recruiting - not because I’ve sold candidates on the company but because I try to give every single person the experience I expect when job hunting. Providing candidates that personable experience with genuine intentions will never backfire & that is a hill I’m willing to die on.

Don't make your recruiter hiss at you! Remember, the small details matter. When submitting your resume, ensure the file name includes your first and last name followed by "Resume." Stop applying for roles you're not qualified for. Okay, let's be real here. You're gonna do what you're gonna do and I can't stop you, but hear me out for a second. We're told to apply to a role even if we only have 50% of the qualifications. And for the most part this is very true, but it needs to be done within reason. Each job posting typically lists both mandatory qualifications and preferred qualifications. Sometimes they are shown separately, and other times they are mixed together. So, when should you apply, and when shouldn't you? This is often a judgement call. Qualifications like years of experience, knowledge of specific programs, and some educational requirements are often flexible. However, licenses, language requirements, and security clearances are often non-negotiable. This is all dependent on the position of course. For example, if a job requires a driver with 5+ years of experience and you have only 2, you should still apply. But if you don’t have a driver’s license, and have never driven before, don’t apply. Similarly, just because you've been in the healthcare industry for 10 years as a lab tech doesn’t mean you can apply for a physician position; that role requires specific qualifications, education, and licenses. If a contractor is needed for a project but must have a secret security clearance, you could meet all other requirements and more, but without that clearance, you won't be considered. Likewise, if you're entry-level and applying for a senior leadership role, or if you have no relevant experience, such as a PSW applying for a Director of Procurement role, it's unrealistic. Please note, there is absolutely no disrespect towards any of the roles mentioned, I was using it solely as examples. While it's important to aim high, shoot your shot and pursue opportunities that challenge you, it's equally crucial to be realistic about your qualifications. Understand the difference between flexible and non-negotiable requirements in job postings.
