Choose the chart that best conveys your message. Ask yourself...what do I want to show? - Composition charts display parts of a whole and/or how they change over time. - Comparison charts show similarities and differences between data points. - Relationship charts highlight correlations between two or more variables. - Distribution charts show data spread and how often they occur. Remember, a simple chart almost always works better. Here's a chart guide from Infogram to get you started.

I write tutorials every day to help you learn Tableau. Less than 2% of you use them. They're great for reference, but not as useful as they would be if you practiced. Take the content I give you and rebuild each chart or tutorial. Put in the reps. You'll improve dramatically. NOTE: Less than 2% is a guess, but I'm fairly sure it's accurate given the comments and DMs I get.

To all teachers, Instructors, TAs, Professors, and the like... A magical 🪄 package 📦 to help your students get a taste of real world data analysis, {messy}. I think back to all the years working as a data manager and on-boarding new hires, they always got tripped up in the early stages assuming the data was structured properly, no missing values, numeric fields were character type, manually entered data with misspelled types of categorical variables, and so on. "Data has a massive credibility problem. You owned the P&L of a $100MM data business, you need to put that front and center so people know you've actually done something real and aren't full of shit. There are countless 'Data & AI Experts' out there who don't actually know anything." There was a very popular post yesterday from Vin Vashishta about how too many people put "Ex-Company" on their profiles, and should stop living in the past. Since my profile has "ex Nielsen P&L owner | ex unicorn SaaS VP of Data" I thought I'd provide some perspective from the other side. The advice at the top of this post was given to me by a fellow data founder when I first started posting online. Since then, for those that have followed me, I hope my content has made it clear that I've spent many years in the trenches actually doing things with data. But when people first look at my profile - knowing that I owned the P&L of a data business at Nielsen and that I was a VP of data at a unicorn startup gives me WAY more credibility than the generic "Data Leader" headline I had before. So if you see credibility as one of the most important things you need to quickly convey - pointing to the fact that you worked at highly credible companies is a good way to do that. Yes it's only one signal... There are a lot of idiots that work at all these great companies, and having a job doesn't mean you were actually good at it. But it's far less likely you're a complete fraud.

Want to know something about the data Treasury use? - There's *ALOT* of it. Nerd-out incoming, of novel LLM functionality we're starting to explore. One of the cooler things we're working on is how to best help policy professionals take advantage of Generative AI. We've already built an architecture that let's Policy teams upload documents, index those explore different ways to more effectively search and retrieve intelligence. It's practically old hat now - and the RAG space is developing all the time. But we're sat atop a lot of quickly arriving intelligence, and now it's all indexed ready to be used by the LLM, the next question is how can we help teams benefit from a shared intelligence, to help signpost intel that team a that team b could benefit from. Sure, teams talk - but is there an opportunity to be even better? Enter... the KRAKEN! (not the real name). We're building a fetcher of fetchers, an LLM powered pipeline that builds mesh of metadata, facts, concepts and entities from documents indexed that day. It records facts gleaned from documents, then tracks those in future documents, allowing us to specifically look for things we care about, and observe new concepts or entities emerge over time. We think that that this will both help us ground specific LLM experiences, as well as form a foundation of an organisational central intelligence pool, and we'll keep you posted on how it's going. Imagine you owned the business instead of worked in it as a data person. Would you choose yourself to be an advisor on important decisions? If your answer is "If I owned this business, I would be really lucky to have someone just like me as a data person helping everyone make important decisions." Great. If not... For most data people - the best side hustle is getting better at your actual job. It takes a lot of effort, time, and expense to go from zero to $1k/month with some random side business... If instead you focus on being a superstar at your data job you would have a much clearer path to WAY more than $1k extra per month. Not to mention the risks! That side hustle might hurt you at your day job. You might succeed at your side gig and get to $1k/month but lose the $30k promotion - or lose your job entirely! But Solomon, don't you post on LinkedIn and don't you have a long history of doing side projects? I never posted on LinkedIn until I started a company where part of my job became marketing my product to data people. I would never have survived the tough times that happen as a data leader if all the business executives at my company saw me posting on LinkedIn while they had major issues going on. This is why VERY few data leaders in companies are out trying to "build their personal brands" on LinkedIn. It's a non-starter politically. If Delivery Layer got acquired and I found myself in a CDO role vs. a marketing role, my LinkedIn activity would be substantially different. I also did side projects, but never side hustles! The projects were to build my skills for my main job. I wasn't out trying to make money from any of them. Many of the projects were supporting my company's brand by doing things like open sourcing projects that were useful for work etc... I also only did those projects when working at companies that encouraged side projects. For many years I did no side projects because I was not at a company where the culture celebrated side projects. If you were in a dead-end career with no growth prospects, I'd give very different advice. But great data people have amazing career opportunities if you become a superstar at your job. Sacrificing that future for your side hustle doesn't seem worth it.

🤔 How many times have you reinvented the wheel in Tableau?   I thought the radial jittering in my IronViz qualifier was pretty cool.   But it looks like my IronViz mentor, Samuel Parsons, had done the same thing 5 years prior.   At least I settled on the same chart name as he did, so that's what it is - a radial jitter.   These are good for infographics showing a distribution that concentrates around a central point.   📝 In the near future, I hope to make a simple dashboard showing three variations of this chart type, including evenly distributed dots as well as dots on the periphery.   In this #makeovermonday case, I thought the idea of concentrated dots meshed well with firearms - I got the idea from seeing the bee swarms by Shangruff Raina and Sherzodbek I.   Anyhow, I adjusted the worksheet size so that the output is slightly elliptical to fit well in the target image.   ⚖️ I thought I'd go down the route of comparison to domestic purchases because I knew those numbers were high. US south markets remain the best microcosm for the strong apartment demand being eclipsed by even more remarkable supply storyline. A few Texas and Florida markets in particular seeing more downwards pressure on performance than this same time last year, but worth noting that some sub-regional bifurcation is beginning to show (i.e., some markets marching back towards supply/demand equilibrium while others likely another 12+ months out from achieving this).
